Variant Rules for 1853 Haathi

These were voted on by the players. Only changes from the printed rules are listed (rejected variants are not mentioned)

Bidding

Using Stuart Dagger's rules from Tuning 1853. (Paraphrased here; HTML of original article to be available in the indefinite future)
  1. All players decide on their bid amount and mail the bid holder (an impartial observer) their bid.
  2. After all bids are submitted then we seat players by amount, using the dice server to break ties. (The cities you can bid are standard, although modified by our rule 5.) Highest bid gets the Elephant.
  3. Starting with the Elephant holder and continuing around each player decides on a single city and claims the share associated with that city. You email your choice of stock to the group. You also email your city to the bid holder. You cannot pass if you have not yet bid for the minimum number of cities (3) or you have more than 40L of your bid amount unclaimed and you have not yet bid on the maximum number of cities (5).
  4. Pay for as many shares of stock as you can, as per the standard rules. The standard rules for bidding more value of shares that you can pay for still hold.
  5. The first share round starts beginning with the first player. (Remember the elephant can be auctioned after each full share round.)

Map Typos

There are some typos in the 1.3 ps18xx distribution. In the 1853-Haathi master postscript map the following errors have been fixed: There are also discrepancies in the number of stations on certain of the green mixed-gague city tiles (96, 97, 98, 99). These were resolved by vote of the players in the game.

Other Rules Resolved

You are allowed to have connections into buff hexsides.

The buff hexsides are:

Total cash in the game is 12500L (no limit on CC's)

Proposed Variants and Status

1. Initial Bidding/Startup

Stuart Dagger's bidding rules. (2 phases - write down and reveal the amount, then buy shares until you use up your city/bid number. )

Money = 570L, 5 shares float a company

2. MIK2 Commodity cards.

Not being used

3. Stock Market Price increases

No change if no shares are in the bank pool.

Move by n slots if the company runs for n*stock value (n = 1-4). No movement if the run is less than 1/2 share value.

4. BBCI can be a "major" RR

If the BBCI (#5) is started in the first stock round, then it is treated as a "major" with a second base in Bombay NE and 2 tile plays like RR's number 1-4.

Also, the tile at Ajmer (H10) costs 70 (not 140) to lay if the BCCI is a starting RR.

5. Restricted Ganges valley bid.

In a bid of 3 cities a player may only include 1 of Cawnpore, Lucknow, Allahabad, Benares and Patna. A bid of more than 3 cities may not include more than 2 of the Ganges cities (that list plus Calcutta).

This is a slight tightening of the bid rules, from Stuart Dagger's proposed variants. The difference is in a bid of 3 cities, two 20-value cities from the Ganges Valley are not allowed (one of the Ganges cities must be Calcutta). It does not change the absolute limit of two Ganges cities in a bid.

6. Double tile lays for major companies are not automatic

We are not using this proposed variant from Stuart's set.

7. Early Meter Trains

We are not using this proposed variant from Stuart's set.

8. Add Broad-gague Gentle Curve Small City Tiles

We are not using this proposed variant from Stuart's set.

9. Relax Territorrial Restrictions for 5 and 6 Trains

We are not using this proposed variant from Stuart's set.

10. No yellow tile restriction.

There are no limits on the availability of the yellow tiles.

11. Minimum Number of Starting Companies

We are not using this proposed variant (19.1 from the original rules)
