Boxster ModificationsThis is, of course, a rather large subject, so I will mostly just discuss modifications that I've made to my car for autocrossing purposes, and some of those that I've seen other autocrossers make. And, of course, I have lots of Boxster-related links, including those for many Porsche specialist high-performance shops. So that should help you find what you're looking for if you don't see it here.
Before you start making any modifications to your Boxster, I highly recommend that you first:
- Understand clearly how the factory parts work, and why Porsche designed them the way they did. You'd be surprised at the huge amount of careful thought and research automotive engineers devote to seemingly inconsequential details in order to design the best possible cars. You should try to be as thorough as they are when considering modifications... though that's a very difficult goal to achieve.
- Have a clear idea of what you're trying to accomplish with any modifications. Especially if you'll be competing with your Boxster in autocrossing, time trialing, etc. The rules will guide your modifications. Since I mostly compete in SCCA autocrossing, my comments are usually biased toward their rules. PCA competition rules vary a lot between regions and even individual clubs, so you'll have to get a copy of your local PCA club's rules and read them carefully before making mods for PCA competition.
- Find a mechanic who is skilled in the type of modifications you want to make, and who can do a thorough and safe installation and adjustment of your modifications. The various Porsche-related magazines, like the PCA's Panorama magazine, have lots of ads for such mechanics. Or do it yourself if you have those skills already, and all the right tools and manuals.
- Realise that some of these modifications may not be legal for use on public highways. Do your research first and find out what modifications you may legally make in your area. This varies a lot between different countries and states.
