Rahul.Net Directadmin Point-and-Click Web Hosting

Revised Pricing 2008-02-05

All web sites are hosted in a Linux environment. A point-and-click user interface is provided to let you manage your web site (see 'Directadmin user interface') in the table below. This web-hosting schedule includes web/ftp service, email, and related DNS services. Nationwide dial-up PPP access may be added to any account type for an additional $10/month.

As of 2008-02-05, the following revisions have been made.

Note: With these changes, to get the amount of disk space given an account type, double the number. E.g., d100a includes 200 M, not 100 M.

Also added: "e" series plans, which are more eocnomical than "d" series plans.

Note: "d" and "e" accounts are on different servers. There is no in-place upgrade or downgrade between "d" and "e". To migrate from "d" to "e" (or back), you would create a new account, and close the old one when it is no longer needed. If you close the old account within 30 days of starting the new one on a different server, you will pay only for the higher-priced account during the 30-day overlap. If you keep both for longer than 30 days, there is no overlap credit.

Naming Scheme

The "d" series of accounts is intended for end-users, and the "r" series is intended for resellers. Accounts with the suffix "a" allow basic non-dynamic web sites to be created without using cgi-bin programs or PHP . Accounts with suffix "b" allow dynamic web sites that use cgi-bin programs or PHP. Accounts with suffix "c" additionally allow the use of SSL, anonymous ftp, and cron jobs. Some other resource limits are greater going from suffix "a" to "b" to "c".

Descriptions of Features

Directadmin user interface. This is a web-based point-and-click user interface that makes it easy for you to manage your web site. To access a free demonstration of this feature, try this link:

The actual features and "look and feel" available for your account will vary from the features available via the free demonstration links above. To explore the details of our environment further, please ask us for a free trial account.

Disk space. Disk space is in binary megabytes, where: 1 binary megabyte = 1 MB = 1024 * 1024 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes. Calculations are approximate. Our servers use disk space in blocks of 4096 bytes.

Monthly traffic. This is the number of decimal gigabytes of data your account may transfer per month. One decimal gigabyte = 1 G = 1 gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Calculations are approximate. All types of file uploads and downloads, as well as http and https accesses, as well as bandwidth used by your email, are all added together to calculate your total traffic. You may increase the monthly traffic limit for your account at the rate of $2 for each additional G/month. There is a one-time $5 fee each time we adjust your monthly traffic limit.

Linux shell via ssh. You may connect via ssh protocol and log into the shell. At least the following shells are available: sh, bash. Shell access is provided for the purpose of testing, debugging, and updating your web site. For security, ssh access might not be initially enabled for your account, since not all users need it; but it will be enabled upon request if included in your accout type.

SSL. Your web site may be accessed in a secure manner via the use of a URL of the form https://hostname.rahul.net/~user. You do not need to buy any SSL certificate--it is already installed into our server.

Cron jobs. The point-and-click interface lets you schedule cron jobs, i.e., activities to be done regularly at predetermined times.

Cgi-bin programs. Not all web sites will need access to cgi-bin programs. If you decide to use any cgi-bin programs, you may need to develop enough pogramming expertise to make them work correctly. Technical support for cgi-bin programs must be provided entirely by you, except that we can in some limited cases provided quick debugging of your cgi-bin program for a $15 fee per incident.

PHP. This programming language lets you create dynamic web pages that can, among other things, make use of MySQL databases.

Number of domains. This is the maximum number of domains supported by an account. Each domain may correspond to a distinct web site. For example, if the number of domains for an account is 2, this means that you can actually set up two different web sites under the same account, each with its own domain name. Thus, for example, there could be two web sites under one account, one at www.example.com, and another at www.rahul.net. Both web sites will share the disk space limit and traffic limit for the account. Note that you can also use subdomains and set up even more web sites under an account--see the description for Number of Subdomains below.

Number of subdomains. This is the maximum number of subdomains supported by an account. Each subdomain corresponds to a web site. Each account can hold more than one web site. If the number of subdomains for an account is 10, this means that you can actually set up ten different web sites under the same account, as subdomains of the same domain. For example, within the domain example.com you could have multiple web sites at demo.example.com, test.example.com, products.example.com, and sales.example.com. All these web sites will share the disk space and traffic/transfer limits for the account. Note that you can also use completely different domains to set up multiple web sites under an account -- see the description for Number of Domains above. You can, of course, use multiple domains and within each domain use multiple subdomains. Note also that you can add even more domains as domain pointers, as described below.

Number of domain pointers. A domain pointer is just a domain that does not exist independentlly, but rather, points to some other domain. If www.example.com is a domain pointer pointing to www.anotherdomain.net, then anybody connecting with a web browser to www.example.com will reach the web site for www.anotherdomain.net.

DNS management. Most people will not need this, as the Directadmin environment automatically adds all the needed DNS records when you use the control panel to add a domain to your account. The DNS management feature lets you fine-tune your DNS and add and remove individual MXNSCNAME, and TXT records. Careless use of DNS management may result in erroneous DNS entries that can cause your web site to become inaccessible or your email to be lost. For non-reseller users, DNS management is enabled only if requested by the user, for account types that support it.

Mailboxes. This is the number of distinct mailboxes you can create under an account. Each mailbox holds incoming mail for a distinct email address of the form user@domain. Thus you can have many different people receiving mail through your account. You could create a mailbox for each member of your family, or for each employee in your company, or for your friends, and so on. You can use the control panel to create and delete mailboxes as needed, up to the maximum limit for your account. Each mailbox can be accessed via any mail client that uses POP or IMAP. Each mailbox can also be accessed via the webmail interface built into the control panel.

Mailing lists. A mailing list allows the use of Majordomo mailing list software (see its home page at http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/) to maintain lists of email addresses and allow subscribers to send mail to the list.

Autoresponders. An autoresponder will automatically reply to mail arriving for a specific email address with a predetermined message created in advance by you.

Mail forwarding. Mail forwarding when enabled causes mail arriving for a specific email address to be automatically forwarded to some other local or remote email address.

MySQL databases. This is the number of distinct MySQL databases you may create for your account.

Server Side Includes. This is a feature of the Apache web server.

FTP accounts. Each ftp account will have its own login name and password.

Anonymous FTP. This allows you to enable anonymous users to do ftp transfers.

Microsoft Frontpage. This feature will let you create and upload your web site using Microsoft FrontPage software on your machine.

Reseller option. Accounts with the reseller option come with a Reseller control panel. This allows you to create and delete accounts for your own customers. With the Reseller option, you can become a web service provider. Using the Reseller control panel, you can set disk space limits, traffic/transfer limits, limits on number of domains, limits on the number of mailboxes, and limits on the number of MySQL databases, for your customers' accounts. The limits for your customers' accounts will subtract from your own allowances. For example, if your own account includes 500 MB disk space, then your and your customers' accounts will be collectively able to use a total of up to 500 MB disk space. You will be permitted to over-allocate resources, i.e., limit your customers' resource limits to add up to more than your own; but actual total usage by your customers will be limited to your own limits. For example, if your disk space limit is 500 MB, you can create 10 customers each with a 200 MB limit; but your and their total usage will still be limited to 500 MB.

Backups. You may generate and download a backup of your account at any time. Later on, this backup may be uploaded and restored into your account. Resellers may additionally download a backup of any or all their customers' accounts and restore them as needed. Resellers may schedule the generation of backups on a predetermined schedule.

Installatron. This is a special tool that lets you painlessly install into your account any of a large number of free pograms including: blogs, wikis, forums, shopping carts, content management systems, calendars, and other types of programs. See the Installatron web site at http://www.installatron.com/ for more details.

q-UNL.  This stands for "quasi-unlimited". We don't limit the traffic ahead of time, and we never limit the total amount of data transferred. Sporadic peaks, cause by sudden publicity of your web site, will generally be ignored. If the peaks in your bandwidth or CPU usage are far above those of a typical user, and are ongoing rather than sporadic, then we will contact you and discuss your long-term needs and what type of account will best serve those needs. For the majority of users, this will never happen. The intent is to give you the impression of having unlimited bandwidth, and avoid bothering you with bandwidth limits so far as possible, while still protecting our network performance and our bottom line.
