January 2002 HUSTLE TALK Okay, the newsletter is now back after a lengthy hiatus since May 2000. Raul has handed the job over to me and I finally got off my lazy behind and got things back in order. Many events have occurred since the last newsletter issue - too many to even attempt to list. Therefore, I'm only going to touch on a few of the more recent events. There were four major Hustle events in 2001 - International Hustle & Salsa Competition in Miami, Florida; World Hustle Dance Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada; Disco America Dance Championship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Hustle USA Dance Championships in East Rutherford, New Jersey - all of which helped to expose & promote Hustle dancing. Praise goes out to all the event organizers & their staff. A new dance organization, The International Hustle Dance Association (IHDA), has been created to help promote, protect and nurture the dance HUSTLE as a social & competitive dance form. Visit the website at www.hustleusa.com/IHDA/index.html. On April 28, 2001, Angel Figueroa and Debbie Bernard exchanged marriage vows. Congratulations to Angel & Debbie Figueroa! Sadly, two tragic events occurred that touched our hearts and will forever change our lives. First, Ginger Dimaio, an avid hustle dancer, passed away in the early part of the year from cancer. She will be greatly missed by the Hustle community and all of those who's lives she touched. Second, a date that will not be forgotten.... On September 11, 2001, an act of ruthless terrorism was committed on the United States of America as four planes were hijacked and three of them flown into the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. Thousands of lives perished and the WTC, an icon of New York and capitalism, was destroyed. This tragic event affected everyone worldwide. The mood around the country, especially in New York, was somber. In light of this tragedy, it was good to see the dancers at Hustle USA showing their support, courage, and patriotism. At this time, more than ever, it's important that we share our love with family and friends and show our support for the firefighters, policemen, volunteer workers, military personnel, and government. Please, donate blood, clothing, food, money, time, etc. to help out all the victims of this tragedy. On a happier note, I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving, a wonderful holiday season, and a Happy New Year! After eating so much food, it's now time to work it all off by dancing. What better way to start the New Year than by getting on the dance floor? ** News flash: The Grand Palace Chinese Restaurant in Sunnyvale, where we regularly held lessons & dancing on Tuesday nights, has been purchased. Unfortunately, the new owners have decided not to hold dances there any longer; therefore, we have now moved the Tuesday night parties to the Chef King restaurant at 727 W. Hamilton Ave. (one block west of San Tomas Expressway) in Campbell. This will be the new hot spot starting Tuesday, January 8, 2002. The cover charge is $9.00.
