HUSTLE DANCE CLUB NEWS OCT. 18th, 1995 Well Hustle fans we have just returned from New York City and have experienced one of the few pleasures in life. The 1st annual Hustle Dance Championships, sponsored by HUSTLE USA's, Maria Torres, Donna Boyle, Debra Hampton and Dave Sarul. This was the first Hustle Event/Championships organized by Hustle Dancers for Hustle Dancers. For those of you who were not able to attend, this is a MUST GO TO EVENT for 1996 so start planning NOW!! Before I continue I would like to thank all the people who attended the competition, from the Bay Area, both Club members and non members: Raymond Abaya, Raul Ante, Ava Apple, Toni Barajas, Bobby Concepcion, Cathy Econom, Stefanie Elkin, Sam Howard, Jay Larrick, Tess Martillano, Lilianna Martinez, Marc McGovern, Karen Mills, Adele Poenisch, Gary Tom, Ylva Wintzell, Jeff Yee, Audrianna Correa, Lisa Grefaldia, Lana Malinka Carla Merrill, Ron Nicholson & Laura Segal. Thank you all for making this event, a great success. (My Apologies to any one I may have left off by accident). A standing ovation goes to Ylva Wintzell and Bobby Concepcion for competing in the Professional Classic Hustle Division. All of us who were there, appreciate your efforts and applaud your DANCING! Special recognition to Ylva, Bobby and Ava Apple for having enough energy to enter the JACK-N-Jill Competition. You all danced wonderfully. A NEW YORK CITY DIARY: Oct 13, 14, 15, 16th 1995 Friday night, Maria Torres hosted a party, at Stepping Out Studio, for all the Attendees. What do you get when Great Hustle dancers, from all over the United States, are gathered in one room?? An Orgy of Hustle dancing or better yet a Super-Nova of Hustle dancing. With D.J. Bobby Morales at the control board, the music was non-stop. The evenings entertainment saw Debra & Dave's seven year old son, Sean, dance a cute hustle routine with Maria Torres, then the three "D's" Donna Boyle, Dave Sarul and Debra Hampton provided a spark with a Hustle exhibition, John Festa and Ramiro Gonzales doing a hot West Coast Swing, Diane & Angle Figueroa a Flashy Mombo and finally Maria Torres and Arte Phillips doing a sizzling Hustle routine. After several hours of Hot and Furious dancing, most of us retired to our rooms, but several hardy souls decided to go out an Salsa dance. (That's another story). Saturday morning at 10am the first workshops began. Debra Hampton taught the Beginning Hustle, Arte Phillips and Maria Torres, A Master Hustle Workshop, Donna Boyle taught the Intermediate Hustle. The West Coast Swing Workshop by John Festa, and Angel Figueroa taught the intermediate Mombo. Saturday evening the doors opened at 6pm and the fun became intense. The Preliminary rounds for both the Professional Classic and Theatre Arts Divisions began plus the finals for the Amateur Classic and Theatre Arts Division. All the competitors came ready and primed to dance and you could describe the intensity level as fierce! (that's how New Yorker's would describe it). The Hustle Dance Club was represented by Ylva Wintzell and Bobby Concepcion, they competed in the Professional Classic Division (one of the most competitive divisions). They did not make the finals but they have nothing to be ashamed of, they preformed very well, as did all the couples, and the judging was extremely tight in this event. This division was one of the hardest to judge, I know, because I was one of them. Judging the competitions were Sandy Fortuna from New Jersey, Angel Figueroa, Arte Phillips, John Festa from New York, Lynn Vogen and Raul Ante from California. With two outstanding routines, the Amateur Classic and Theatre Arts Divisions were won by the husband and wife team of Brain and Syvana Gallagher from Pennsylvania. Through out the evenings entertainment and competitions there were hours and hours of general dancing, late that evening, all the weary competitors and spectators retired, except for a few crazy people, who, again went Salsa dancing (different night, same story). Sunday Morning the Advanced Hustle & Ladies Styling Workshop began with Maria Torres and also the Advanced Mombo Workshop with Angel Figueroa. The doors opened at 10:45 and we started all over again. The finals in the Professional Classic and Theatre Arts Division plus the Open Cabaret and the Jack-N-Jill. Sixteen couples entered The Jack-N-Jill Division, won by Jannet Axlerod and Stan Wojanovich, our own Bobby Concepcion and his partner Theresa managed 3rd place and Ava Apple and her partner Abner took 4th, excellent showing! Kyle Larson and Dale Stotts won The Open Caberet Division with a heart warming routine, clearly one of my favorites. The Professional Classic Division was won with a rock'em, sock'em mortal combat routine by Barry Douglas and Joyce Stoughton, from Michigan. With a thrilling display of aerials, the Professional Theatre Arts Division was won by, New York's Kenny Gonzales and Lourdes Jones, a Special Congratulations to Arte Phillips for receiving the Eddie Vega Award for Excellence, presented by Maria Torres. And finally Maria and Arte treated the crowd to an inspiring Hustle Exhibition. As before, Sunday afternoon was filled with hours of Hustle dancing and most of us had our fix, but again some fool hearted people wanted to Salsa! (not again?) Monday was a day to recuperate, wait a minute! We're in New York City. Sight seeing was the agenda for the day. Shop Till Ya Drop, Eat Till Ya Pop! Monday night, at Dance Sport Studio, Hustle Dancing again, but this time it was quite different. Back Room or Street hustle was on tap. This was an awesome sight to watch, Street dancing at its best! I will not go into detail because you'll just have to see it for yourself!! Plan for 1996! (What? No Salsa?) In parting, I would like to congratulate Maria, Donna, Debra and Dave for the fantastic job they did in organizing this event and to all the volunteers who helped in making this a successful dance championship, we are looking forward to next year. And special thanks, to all the new Hustle Dancers we met, Barry & Joyce from Michigan, Tony from Texas, Dorin, Bill, Randy, Donna and Frank from Florida, Kathy from Conneticutt, Joyce from Maryland, Keith from Louisianna, Lynn, Ceasar, Eric, Jody, and Linda from Los Angeles, California, Roberta from Denver, CO., And Cherie from Washington D.C., and many, more who's names I can not remember. It was fun, see you all in 1996! P.S. Oct. 12, 13, 1996 remember these dates! Stay tuned for more information. NOT SO FAMOUS QUOTES FROM NEW YORK: (When asked to give me their impressions of the dance weekend.) Jay Larrick: "Dancing was fast paced and generally used more dance floor per couple than we do. Competitive Hustle routines were very theatrical, in terms of presentation and lifts. Lott'sa good moves" Ylva Wintzell: "Manhattan is a great happening place to travel to anyway and to, on top of that, dance with all these wonderful hustlers from Philadelphia, Miami, Detroit and elsewhere was a dream come true. But best of all was meeting those who never made it to the bright lights of the convention, The Incredible New York Street Dancers!!" Bobby Concepcion: " All (street hustle) dancing in New York, reminded me of the old Back Room Hustle Clubs, where you had to stare down everyone strutting their best moves and just jamming all night long." Sam Howard: "I think anyone interested in Hustle, who can make the trip, should go to New York. It was a real eye opener for me to see all the varieties in style, all on the same floor at the same time. People were generally very friendly and there was plenty of opportunity for general dancing. A lot of the dancers were, frankly, incredible, combining power with smoothness. Anyone interested in finding out about the " New York Style" should see this stuff!" Stefanie Elkin: "It was very exciting dancing with people from all around the country, whose passion is Hustle. Thankfully most everything was familiar and easy to recognize and follow. But, what was most fun was experiencing all the different styles from different parts of the country. I was fascinated by the large sweeping moves from Chicago, the precision from Texas and best of all the Hustle Syncopations from the New Yorkers. Overall, the level of dancing was quite high and the trip greatly worth while. Cathy Econom: "It was continuous Hustle, which is the way Hustle should be danced." Marc Mc Govern: "The street/club Hustle dancing in New York City was powerful with a light lead. They built up momentum, in a series of patterns, where the leaders created momentum and then followed the followers momentum that they had created. The number and beauty of turn patterns was astounding, built on a sample set of basic patterns and this "momentum technique" that I saw. This was the most visually pleasing and exciting dancing I have ever seen, of any type. Ava Apple: "I was very pleased so many from the Bay Area attended and showed we've got it goin' on!" Congratulations to Maria, Donna, Debra and Dave for a great event." EDITORIAL NOTE: Well, there it is in a nut shell, testimony from people who saw some great Hustle dancing. I hope no one misunderstands this, but, even tough I found it encouraging to see Hustle Dancing at West Coast Swing Conventions and Country Western Conventions and Ballroom Competitions, it does not compare to a real Hustle Dance Convention for real Hustle Dancers. Enough said, the next Hustle Convention is less than a year away so be there or be square!.
