STEP BY STEP By Ava Apple
The "Hustle", fast, syncopated, exciting and for some of us
a part of our lives for over 15 years. I recently asked
several teachers and social dancers " How long have you
been dancing Hustle and how did you first learn?"
Marge Gabbert of Fascinating Rhythm Dance School, San
Francisco, first found out about Hustle in 1977 when she
took a Jitterbug workshop from Michael Blue. Michael, a
native New Yorker was Marge's first Hustle teacher. Around
the same time Ron Bermudez went to New York to take lessons
from Eddie Vega and his dance partner Lourdes plus Floyd &
Nellie, two of New Yorks best Hustle couples. Several time
Ron brought dancers out to San Francisco for workshops that
Marge, Myself and many others attended.
In 1979, Arthur Calandrelli was teaching ballroom at Fred
Astaire in Norfolk, Virgina but learned the Hustle by
watching the dancers out at the Disco's. In 1980 he moved
to the bay Area and started teaching at Arthur Murray, on
sutter street. Busby's (remember aluminum dance floors?)
was where Arthur and his friends would practice their
Hustle Dancing.
Michael Cohen has been dancing since the night The Camp
David Peace Accord was signed. He was living in Madison
Wisconsin at the time and his friend, Ron, a local Hustle
Instructor, wrote down the steps for him (Tap, replace,
step & step, step, step). Mike then programed his PDP-8L
computer to act as metronome and started practicing, first at 40 BPM
(beats per minute) then up to 140 BPM. Soon after, he was
teaching for the Park & Rec. Dept. with his partner Denise
Rall. Some of his students were teenagers from the local
"4H" club. He moved to Santa Cruz, CA. in 1980. There
wasn't much Hustle there so he would go dancing in San
Jose, at "The Lariat" and "Cowgirls" Discos.
As for myself, my first taste of Hustle was when I happened
to walk by Bob Beans Dance Studio and saw a friend teaching
a Hustle class. I stopped in and signed up.
Some of my first teachers were Bob Dean, Bob Massey and Ron
Bermudez. I started going to disco's in my mid-teens.
"Lehr's Cabaret", "Studio West", "B Street"., "Tingles" and
"The I Beam" were some of our favorites clubs in the Bay Area.
Until next time remember to, keep learning & keep Dancing.

Staring April 12, at the Metronome Ballroom's Friday night
Hustle Party and every second Friday of the month there
after, it is now officially The Hustle Dance Club's "CLUB
NIGHT OUT". All HDC members will receive $1.00 off
admission price when you show your membership card! So Come
Out And Join The Fun @ The Metronome Ballroom!
Congratulations to Hustle Dance Club members Diana Abele
and Marc Mc Govern for their second place finish at The
Metronome Ballroom's Jack-N-Jill contest held March 15th.
First Place to Eric Concepcion and his dance partner who's
name we forgot, sorry about that, third place to Christine
and Raul. Thanks to Paul Overton and the Metronome Ballroom
for providing the time, the place and the awards for the
contest. Looking forward to the next one.
March 30, Marc McGovern and I recently went on a trip to
Los Angeles and were treated to a Team Competition, held at
Moose Mc Gillicuty's in Long Beach, each team had four
couples, each couple had to dance one dance. One couple
danced West Coast Swing, another Western Two Step, one
Latin Dance (Salsa, Tango or Cha Cha) and of course one
HUSTLE. All the dance couples were extremely polished and
dance with much enthusiasm. Most important, they all had
FUN Dancing. The hustle dance couples included Debra
Hampton and Dave Sarul, from Hustle U.S.A., Lynn Fogen and
her husband Paul Russo, Beata Howe and Archie Dawson and
finnally Eliane and her dance partner Miller Kraslov. All
the Hustle routines were very well done and exciting to
watch. An interesting observation was they all used New
York Style patterns in their routines, not quite what I
expected to see, considering Los Angeles has so many
different styles of Hustle. Pamela Jawish and Ken
McAllister, from the Bay Area, helped judge the contest.
Here are the results from The Hustle competition, held in
Dallas, Texas, at the Classic 96 Invitational Swing Dance
Contest, April 4-7th. First place, to HUSTLE USA and Hustle
Dance Club member's Maria Torres and Angel Figueroa from
New York, second place to Rosalie Campos and Jesse Infante
from Los Angeles, and third place to Joyce Stoughton and
Barry Douglas from Michigan. Other competitors included
HUSTLE USA and Hustle Dance Club Members's Debra Hampton
and Dave Sarul, who received a standing ovation and danced
very well according to some observers but did not place,
also HDC member Tony Pace from Huston, Texas and Brad Samis
and Laura Jones from Dallas Texas. Congratulations to Maria
and Angel for Business as usual, they also took first place
in the Caberet Division with second place going to U.S.
Swing Champions Laureen Baldovi and Robert Royston and
third place to Joyce Stoughton and Barry Douglas.

Raul Ante
