HUSTLE DANCE CLUB NEWS LETTER March 1997 STEP by STEP...... By Ava Apple "Hot fun in the summertime..." but wait, it's the middle of winter!? Not in Miami, where days are in the mid 70's and you can go out at night without a jacket. There's lots of Hustle in Miami, however while we in the Bay Area do our dancing at studios they go dancing at the niteclubs. This was fun for a change, but it was very crowded and I was stepped on several times by the "Freestyler's". It also makes you appreciate the beautiful floors at both "Starlite" & "Metronome", at nightclubs it's either ceramic tile, concrete or very dirty (& sticky) wood. On the plus side, the Miami dancers have become very good at dancing in small spaces. We went to several nightclubs, "Club Boca" in Boca Raton, which had a nice sized, but funky floor (sticky in one spot, like ice in another), "Alcazaba" in Coral Gables, that played a nice mix of Disco & Salsa, and "Bash" in South Beach, where we "Tore the roof off the **!@+$&*" till 4am. Apparently they don't usually see Hustle at this club and several times we drew a crowd, one guy who was watching us cut in and turned out to be a pretty good dancer. There were quite a few Hustle dancers there, Drew Axelrod, John Mauritzier (visiting from N.Y.), Miami Manny, Jorge Gomez, my cousin Victoria, Myra, and Luis Rosa, my "Just Dance" partner from "Hustle USA" '96 (also visiting from N.Y.). There's also lots of Salsa, or to be precise "Casino" & "Casino De Rueda", the latter being sort of a salsa "square dance". On our first night we went to a Rueda class held in a large banquet hall (tile floor). It was very well organized, there were three hours of classes, beginning, intermediate, advanced, and each level was broken up into four or five different classes, all at the same time, in the same room. Unfortunately all the teachers had to shout over each other and were getting hoarse after the first hour. What I noticed about the "Casino" style (of partner dancing) was that it was fast, flashy, and seemed to contain elements of Lindy swing and old style "Rope" hustle. I still prefer the more classic Mambo style, where there's more relating to your partner and more freedom to "play" with the music and steps, however there was some very good couples dancing in between the classes and they were exciting to watch. It's interesting how the Hustle Dancers in Miami stay separate from the Salsa (or "Casino") dancers and vice versa. From some of the comments I heard it was as if there was a competition going on to see which crowd could "take over" a nightclub (and it's dance floor). Well, I only sang "La Cucaracha" once this trip... the darn thing was almost two inches long! Supposedly it wasn't really a cockroach - Yeah right! What ever it was I didn't want it crawling around my feet! If you are planning a trip to Florida, consider March 13-16th,'97, for the "Swing into Spring" dance convention in Miami Beach, There will be a dance room playing Hustle and Latin, and also some Hustle workshops. Call Randy Atlas @ 305-756-5037 for more info. Also Debra Hampton and "Disco" Dave Sarul are going to be teaching a workshop in Boca Raton, FL., In April, call Bill Washabaugh @ 407-393-0741 for info. "Muchisimas Gracias" to Drew Axelrod for his generous hospitality; Bill Washabaugh for organizing a workshop for me on short notice; Paulo for the dance (at "Alacazaba"); and "Bo" the Schipperke from Poughkeepsie, devil dog, hound from hell, pot bellied pig (?), bat dog, for making us feel right at home, That is after she nipped me on the leg, lunged at Luis, and bared her vampire fangs at Victoria. "I gotta keep dancin'.... " BITS and PIECES: Sounds like Ava had a pretty interesting time in Miami, I'm just "itching" to go! Oops! that wasn't an itch, It's a ....!!! Here is a novel way of expressing one's gratitude, Joyce Szili from the Washington D.C. Area, gives her students a membership in the Hustle Dance Club after so many lessons. For those of you who can't seem to find the right gift for a dance friend, send them a membership to the Hustle Dance Club. Here's a rebuttle, from a rebuttle, I have not received yet? In the last news letter under "Whinny news" I made a comment about learning some new Hustle. Well, that is true, there are some people who need to learn, some new "stuff"! That does not necessarily mean "New York" Style Hustle. ANY new Hustle from ANY real professional source would be acceptable. In the last year there have been numerous hustle workshops with people like Michael Kiehm, Atlas Griffith, Barry Douglas, Debra Hampton, Maria Torres, Buddy Schwimmer and Beata Howe, they all have Great "Stuff" to teach and they all teach different styles of Hustle. I've had the pleasure of taking workshops from Phil Adams, Barry Douglas, Michael Kiehm, Maria Torres, Debra Hampton and Martin Parker. I've seen workshops by Robert Royston, Atlas Griffith and Michelle Kinkaid. There's a lot to learn out there from some very talented and knowledgeable people. Hopefully this clears the air about "New Hustle". For those of you who were offended by the fact, that, I was referring ONLY to New York Style Hustle, too bad! You probably need to OPEN your eyes and mind a little bit more, I know I did and it made a world of difference. Check this out! There is a local Hustle Instructor who is teaching a four count Hustle Basic (1,2,3, & 4). I also know some instructors start out using four count 1,2,3,4, for beginniners and then change to &1,2,3. Style is style and anyone who likes this count (1,2,3 & 4), Good Luck! What I find bizarre is this "Hustle Instructor" tells his students that WE are teaching Hustle wrong? If, there were 500 dance instructors in the Bay Area teaching beginning, intermediate and advance Hustle, &1,2,3 or 1,2, &3 if you wish, then there's 499 of us that are using the wrong count? Or, could it be, this instructor, has his head and rear end miss placed! Humm. Here's another oddity, while watching this dance instructor dance, he is very smooth, as he should be with an extra count, he will dance to the three count! Practice what you preach or don't preach at all! (If there is anyone else out there in the Hustle world using 1,2,3 & 4 as a basic step I would love to hear from you) Starting Friday, March 14th, I will be hosting the 2nd Friday of each month Hustle Party at The Metronome Ballroom, (I'll also be teaching the Hustle classes), Both to be held at the "Block Party", 300 De Haro St., S.F. (around the corner from the Metronome Ballroom). $10.00 for Lesson & Party, $8.00 for Party only, Hustle Dance Club Members $1.00 OFF! Just show your membership card. Some of you have not been to the Metronome lately, and are not aware of the "New" location. It is a smaller dance floor, with the atmosphere of a niteclub, but can accommodate a large number of dancers at one time. Come on by and check it out! You know the music will be Hot, Hustle and more Hustle, with some Salsa and maybe a West Coast Swing. Any Hustle dancers travelling south to Los Angeles, April 10th. There will be a Hustle Birthday Party for "Disco" Dave Sarul @ The Press Box. Well, I've got to go. Keep dancing and prancing! See you on the dance floor.
