In the March issue I wrote about the Instructor who allegedly told his student (s) three count Hustle was wrong. Well, after a pleasant conversation with this instructor, he assured me he never made these comments and could have been miss-quoted. I may have been a bit harsh with my comments and too hasty. Some people felt the comments were sarcastic & cruel and others thought they were funny, in any case, the comments were probably all of the above! The only thing left unresolved was who really started this rumor? We both agree that some people have a tendency to only hear what they want to hear and what they do hear gets distorted. What this all boils down to, is style is style, what ever it is that you do. Three count, four count or any other count, if you dance well and you lead &/or follow well, that's what counts. As they say- "the proof is in the pudding". I have always admired good dancing and it never mattered to me what style, count or what part of the country someone was from. If it looks good, watch it and enjoy. Variety is the spice of life. I happen to know four count Hustle as well as both versions of three count Hustle (& 1,2,3) (1,2 &3). I also do a six step Hustle, and have danced all of them at some time or another. I prefer to dance &1,2,3 and that is what I practice and that is what I teach, but that is my choice. And yes indeed folks, you do have a CHOICE! If you see something you like in a particular style, it never hurts to learn, it can only enhance your knowledge and your dancing. For those of you who don't have a life and sit around, preaching this style is the ONLY style and this count is the ONLY count, you've got a problem and may need professional help, Psychotherapy or a new dance instructor, take your pick! Thursday, April 10th. Happy Birthday to "Disco" Dave Sarul! His party at the Press Box in Los Angeles, CA. was HOPPING! Bay Area locals Graciella Valencia, Toni Barajas, Marc McGovern and Raul Ante, popped in for a surprise visit. The Press Box was filled with Hustle dancers, Michelle Effros, Linda Lees, Patricia Reeves, Robin Schlesinger, Martin Parker, Archie Dawson, James Adair, Jodee Adair, Christopher Joe, Eric Hernandes, John and Shiela Fisher, Richard Slivkin, Paul Palmintier, Leba Shanna, Lynn Vogen and Debra Hampton and Birthday Boy Dave Sarul plus many more Hustle Dancers whose names I can not remember at this moment. D.J. Ceasar Ricaurte was at his best, playing non-stop Hustle. I wish I could repeat some of the jokes he told me but this News Letter would be XXXX rated so I'll pass. I would like to thank Jodee Adair for her wonderful hospitality while we were there, I'm looking forward to the next trip. The March, April and May Hustle Parties at The Metronome Ballroom, were a huge success! The group classes were full, thanks to the Metronome Ballroom's advertising. The dance party was jumping, thanks to Hustle Dance Club Members: David Amos, Ava Apple, Earl Ante, Bobby Concepcion, Kenny Gee, Adrianna Domocos, Rosemary McNally, Sam Howard, Jay Larrick, Toni Barajas, Marc McGovern, Ylva Wintzell, Michelle Kinkaid, Kyla Kent, Michelle Dick, Ken Greer, Victoria Weatherbee, Hee So, Sonny Umpad, Margie Luna, Stephen Ward, Heather Wagner, Frank Oliva, Ann Keen, Marja Moyer, Luz Nieves, Stephen Barton, Alex Pepple plus friends Graciella Valencia, Jack Van Damme, Lloyd Guro, Daria Sanchez, Theresa Joyce and many more! Next Hustle Party is Friday June 13th. Yes that date is Friday the 13th! Maybe I'll play something scary that night, like a Fox Trot, Oops just kidding. Hope to see more of you attending this next Hustle dance. Thanks again for all your support. Starting Monday June 2nd, Ava Apple will teach and host the Hustle Dance at The Allegro Ballroom (check schedule under where to dance). Hustle Club Members and any Swing Club Members $1.00 off admission price just show your membership card. Those of you who may not know Ava, she is one of the top female Hustle Dancers in the Bay Area. I have known Ava for over fifteen years. I have had the pleasure of watching her and dancing with her, as a competitor and a performer. Monday June 2nd we will have some special guests attending her dance, so come on by and check it out! There have been some rumors surfacing, about the Hustle USA Dance Championships in New York. The rumor is that only couples from New York can win or "place". Don't tell Bobby Concepcion or Kim Vanaman that, They were the winners of the Jack-N-Jill Hustle Division. Bobby's from San Jose, CA. and Kim is from Massachusetts. Second place Jack-N-Jill went to Archie Dawson and Josie Ramirez, from San Diego and Long Beach, CA., Third place Jack-N-Jill to Tom Robertson and Jannette Axlerod from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The Amateur division Classic, Theatre Arts, Cabaret and Just Dance winners Brain & Sylvanna Gallagher are from Pennsylvania. Second place, Just Dance Hustle, went to G.Q and Dara from the Washington D.C. area, third place, humm ... that's a horse of a different color. Luis Rosa, from New York City and Ava Apple from San Francisco, CA. Second place in the Professional Classic division was Tony Pace and Sheryl Forrester from Houston, Texas. Last years (1995) Classic Hustle Champions Barry Douglas and Joyce Stoughton are from Detroit, Michigan. So where are all the New Yorkers! Well, Kenny Gonzales and Nelly Cotto, who are the Professional Classic and Theatre Arts Champions, they hail from New York City and they were unbeatable, just check out the Hustle USA video tape of the event. Luis Rosa and Cedric Freedom, Bookends Champions, they're from New York, they were awesome too. Night Club Salsa winners Oscar Torres and Lucy Rios, I do believe they are also from New York, and their routine was very energetic and entertaining. As a judge at this event, I'm so busy writing the names and numbers of the competitors, the last thing on my mind is what city they're from. And who cares anyway? The only thing that counts is when you step out on the floor, you dance your best. Obviously it's more complex than just dancing your best but good dancing begets good results. As an example, a friend of mine, who was competing told me he thought his division was "a piece of cake", in other words he was sure he was going to win! Unfortunately for him when it came time to "cut to cake" he forgot to bring the right tools and did not fare well. On the judges score sheets there are four categories: choreography (what dancers do), technique (how they do it), execution (how well they do it) and projection (how they sell it). Under each category there are sub-categories, such as, entrance, side by side routines, rhythm, footwork, timing, teamwork, floorcraft, smoothness, showmanship, charisma, etc. There are no categories for what city a dancer is from! Unfortunately any time you have a competition there is going to be a "winner". My personal feelings are anyone with the courage and guts, to put together a routine and get out on the dance floor, in front of an audience of your peers, deserves a round of applause and they (all the competitors) are the real winners. Those of you, who are non-supportive and rather listen to stupid rumors, I think you are the real looser's. The last weeks in April, we had some special friends drop into the bay area for some Hustle dancing. Luis Rosa and Angel Figueroa, from New York City, were here enjoying the weather and the dancing. Those of you, who saw Luis and Angel, at the Grand Palace, strutting their stuff on the dance floor .... it was awesome!! Thanks to Ava Apple and Victoria Weatherbee, Luis' was able to stay and enjoy all the dance venues here in the bay area. Angel's visit was curtesy of The Next Generation Swing Club and Holly Lapore. My special thank you, to Steve Ahl, for his generosity and hospitality during Angel's visit. Also paying a visit were Crispen and Becky Pierce from Seattle WA. Crispen was in Berkeley, teaching a lifts and drops workshop. It was nice having all these super dancers drop by for some great dance fun. I hope more of you come by and check out the bay area dance scene. Well, time is a wasting, and I feel a need for dancing, so keep Dancing & Prancing and I'll see you on the floor.
