Before getting into the discussion of this issue however, I would like to first apologize for not being more precise in my post. I would also like to reiterate that in our experience here, we took a MessagePad 2000 with NetHopper and downloaded web pages including grayscale images WHILE viewing those grayscale images on the screen. We did this for about an hour without any problems - and stopped because we have work to do ; ), not because we ran into problems. Ok, now the issue we've all been discussing... There have been some reports that after changing NetHopper's default "Image Options" to "Load Images", surfing pages that include a number of large graphics may result in an immediate reboot. This issue is being investigated by both Apple and Allpen. However, most of the postings on this topic have been second-hand. So far the first-hand reports Apple has received do not indicate that the reboots are a fundamental issue in the amount of physical memory contained in the MP2000. Some users have hypothesized that NetHopper may be running out of Frames Heap; this theory is under investigation. However, some of the reactions to this hypothesis have been inaccurate. The amount of Frames Heap available is not normally displayed, though there is third-party software which will measure it. The total amount of Frames Heap is a software design decision, not a hardware limitation; the amount of Frames Heap must be less than the amount of hardware memory installed AND memory used for Frames Heap cannot be used for other purposes. The amount of Frames Heap and the amount of total memory are approximately the same on the MP2000 as on the MP130. Most users will find the amount of memory adequate for most purposes. Power users will always be able to find pages too large to download. The designed and expected behavior under this circumstance would be to report a low memory situation via dialog box, not to reboot. Reboots rather than warning dialogs would suggest a software issue rather than a hardware design flaw. So far the reports we've received suggest that the issue is real, but infrequent, and usually after downloading very large amounts of graphics when NetHopper's "Load Images" setting has been checked. If you encounter frequent reboots under other circumstances within NetHopper, it would be helpful to include as much information as possible. The address to email with these reports is: nethopper@allpen.com. Also, please let us know if you encounter similar issues with other software.
