George was born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 20, 1913. As a young man, he took up the saxophone and played cruise ships up and down the Atlantic coast, from Block Island to Brazil. During World War II he moved to Washington, DC , where he met and married Mary Julia Busey. Because music jobs were not steady, he worked odd jobs to supplement his income. Later he worked as a cartographer's aide for the U.S. Geological Survey.
After retiring early because of colon cancer, (which was eliminated without surgery), he joined his wife Mary in the antique business. They had a successful store in Bethesda, MD, The Antique Center. In the early 1970's George and Mary moved to Middletown, RI, which is a "suburb" of Newport. There they opened another Antique Center on Spring Street. They had always enjoyed Rhode Island, and were happy to be back in New England, away from the humidity of Washington.
At the end of his life, while ill with chest cancer, he moved in with his son Paul's family in Maryland in late 1992. He died in Frederick, MD on March 8, 1993 at the age of 80.
