Deborah Levoy

"I think about doing music like painting. I'm trying to get at the essence of a thing with brushstrokes of tones, textures, and phrasing. I want my music to reflect the beautiful parts of life, as well as the atrocities happening in the world.

Although my writing is very personal, by performing my songs I feel myself stretching to something very powerful that connects us all together." -DLL

ALBUMS and LYRICS:

Hungry City

You Are All of These

Something Sacred

My first album, recorded with just myself on vocals and guitar and with the exquisite accompaniment of Todd Phillips on acoustic bass and Dan Ward on electric bass. "Image of Freedom" features Todd's dramatic and haunting performance.

My second album, recorded by Tom Carr at the Music Annex in Menlo Park, CA. We wanted to capture the immediacy of each song, so rather than record each track (guitar and vocals) separately, we recorded "live in the studio". This means that I played each song as I'd perform them: full takes of both guitar and vocals at once. Then we chose our favorite takes of each song for the album.

My third album featuring my collaboration with writer and guitarist Josh Coleman. Because we started collaborating first as songwriters, and only later as recording artists, we decided rather than purposefully recording all songs in one style, that we would to allow each song to "become itself" in the studio, resulting in a collection of songs each with their own mood and identity.

HUNGRY CITY

broken windows, broken lights
buzzing circuits, endless nights
and no silence

nothing in between, no room for anything
black tar blistering
burning beneath the skin
and no cover

concrete, concrete
I need to eat
can you spare some change?
skinny, skinny
staring into rock walls
and rock faces
staring into the open mouth
of this hungry city

open body, open knife
open legs, trampled inside
and no trial
she's out the window, a thin white sheet
high above
flapping in the breeze
barely breathing

concrete, concrete
pouring from the trucks
into her veins
skinny, skinny
flying, slapping hard
against rock walls again
staring into the open mouth
of this hungry city

run for cover, she ran so fast
the tracks of her feet have already passed
they lay flat and cold
tracks up her arms, across her eyes
black words on paper summarize her life
"she was 15 years old"

concrete, concrete
filling souls
and leaving bodies empty
concrete, concrete
have you had enough
or are you still hungry?

staring into the open mouth
of this hungry city

YOU ARE ALL OF THESE

if you were a dance floor of golden wood
on a late, late night, in an empty room
I would take off both my shoes
and slide and glide down the length of you
and I would fly

if you were an ancient quilt, the color of rose
I 'd wrap you 'round me and lay down in your folds
and close my eyes and feel your warmth everywhere
and I would dream

you are all, you are all
you are all of these to me

if you were an oak tree, so old and strong
I would climb up in your limbs so long
and I would play a simple song
while you cradled me
and I would sing

if you were warm waters of see through green
I would dive down to your deepest reefs
and find those treasures buried underneath
and they would shine for me
and I would shine

you are all, you are all
you are all of these to me

COULD I MAKE IT MATTER?

if I made this into a poem
and I put it between lines
could I make it move
could I make it reach
could I make you feel
like you're falling off edges with me
as you hold the page
as you read

could I make it matter?
could I make it matter?
could I make it matter?

I sit here all alone
scratching words on a page
wondering why I do this
day after day
and I watch the kids outside
high school kids who can hardly read
yet I write for the hope
that they'll fall off edges with me

could I make it matter?
could I make it matter?
could I make it matter?

at this moment on the earth
there are bombs falling down
I can watch them on the tv
I can hear the sirens sound
and though my words seem so helpless
I cannot stop writing
because I need to feel
that I am still trying

to make it matter
to make it matter
to make it matter

GOODBYE

of every door I've ever closed
of every home I've ever left
of every goodbye you are the best
you're everyone I've ever known
you're every place I've ever been
you are every vision I have seen

I look over my shoulder and each time I grow older
and each time I can smile with what I've gained
but goodbyes are as hard as glass and easier to break
you lay out the pieces side by side and they never fit the same
goodbyes are as hard as glass and easier to break
you lay out the pieces side by side and they never fit the same

I am just a fragile boat
I do my own repairs
I opened up my door to you
my table and my chairs
I 'll sail when I can catch the wind
I 'll weather out this storm
it's me who keeps me dry
but it was you
who kept me warm

of every door I've ever closed
of every home I've ever left
of every goodbye you are the best

BELLA

more beautiful than the sun burning red lines through the sky
more beautiful than a pine tree standing high
more beautiful than the sand washing into the sea
more beautiful than the waves breaking free
she's Bella, Bella

more beautiful than the blue sage sweetening the air
more beautiful than a sunflower's wide open stare
more beautiful than a hummingbird flashing in the light
more beautiful than the stars opening the night
she's Bella, Bella

great-grandmother Bella
will I see you someday?
I 've only one photo
and stories passed down to me
still you burn like a candle
getting closer each day
till we meet in the end

more beautiful that a candle burning in the night
more beautiful than the shadows playing with the light
more beautiful than the moon stretched out on the horizon
more beautiful than the breeze opening the curtains
she's Bella, Bella

IMAGE OF FREEDOM

in my mind
there's a feeling
a fear
that I'll never be happy and satisfied
and sometimes
I can't do anything at all
but stare, stare down an empty wall

and the image of freedom
doesn't make me want to smile
the image of freedom
makes me want to scream and cry
the image of freedom
tears me apart inside
because I'll never know this freedom
before I die

now let me tell you
about this fantasy inside
where I'm talking about my people
and nobody thinks of genocide
where I am standing
before a mirror tall and wide
and I love that image
with joy and pride

and the image of freedom
is a hunger deep inside
that knows no boundaries
and there are no walls to hide
it makes me despairing
lonely and terrified
to know I cannot have
the only thing I want in life

now let me tell you
about this picture I hold inside
where I am walking
and I have no fear inside
where I am standing
and nobody wants me to die
where you are kissing me
and strangers pass by and smile

and the image of freedom
makes me want to throw this gray day down
the image of freedom
makes me want to run the world around
the image of freedom
makes me want to shake this gloomy town
and build a place where freedom
lives all year 'round

PEACE MAY FIND YOU

hold me against your beating heart
let me feel safe in your arms
cuz money's running thin
and with no jobs in sight
it's hard work just to keep
peace of mind and I say

peace walks in measures
peace walks with small steps
peace walks where patience waits
and peace may find you
when you least expect it

when times are hard it's so easy
to look for truth in a passing mirage
it's a short road to false idols
and it's a long, long road
for a strong heart to find that

peace walks in measures
peace walks with small steps
peace walks where patience waits
and peace may find you
when you least expect it

I cannot erase the worries
you cannot chase the trouble away
but we can keep each other strong and warm
we can help each other wait because

peace walks in measures
peace walks with small steps
peace walks where patience waits
and peace may find you
when you least expect it

THE RIVER AND THE MAN

it's a silent night and the crickets echo
up and down the bed of the dry creek
there's a sleeping bag spread out on the rocks
and there's a sleeping man inside

cricket calls ricochet like bullets in the evening
he dreams of jungles where's no one's safe when you cannot see
he's the only man left in a squad of 20
and no one ever understands why he screams

where once there was a river, now there's only stones
where once there was a lover, now there's just skin and bones
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man, the river and the man
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man

evenings were once spent resting on pillows
her brown hair spilled round him as he fell asleep
with their young hands they made wide plans to love forever
they said their love was a river that flowed stronger each year

when the notice came for him the war was not called a war
and in less than a week he was packed and gone
he sent letters, she wrote back, but his words became so strange and bitter
that she finally needed to move on

where once there was a river, now there's only stones
where once there was a lover, now there's just skin and bones
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man, the river and the man
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man

when he came back he found strangers living in their home
there was no mail, no note, no one to take him in
so he walked and he walked until he came to a dry creek
where he stopped for a while to rest his tired bones

where once there was a river, now there's only stones
where once there was a lover, now there's just skin and bones
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man, the river and the man
in the long drought, the sun beat the heart out
of the river and the man

it's a silent night and the crickets echo
up and down the bed of the dry creek
there's a sleeping bag spread out on the rocks
and there's a sleeping man inside

IN THIS MOMENT

in grey sundown I don't know you
a candle flickers light over your face
in each flash of light I see a side of you
as shadows bend and trace

staring into deep blue grey
watching the colors change in your eyes
you are mystery as you
unfold to me tonight

and in this moment we'll disappear
and in this moment we'll disappear

soon you put the candle out
as evening darkens into night
I feel your warmth beside me
and we hold each other tight

and in darkness there's no secrets kept
as lips and arms entwine
we make and give and take our love
as we share soul and mind

and in this moment we'll disappear
and in this moment we'll disappear

GITTE

you are the summer when it lights up the day
you are a great Dane with those European ways
you are my sister when you're looking just like me
whatcha' doing over there?
why don't you come right back over here
and sit down, and sit down, and sit down
and stay awhile

Gitte, Gitte 'round the world
how I miss you girl
a friend always, can't you see
there's a reason why you mean so much to me

you're a leveler when the world's tipped too far
I 'm instantly singing when you play that guitar
in a world made of ice you're a pocket of fire
whatcha' doing over there?
why don't you come right back over here
and sit down, and sit down, and sit down
and stay awhile

Gitte, Gitte 'round the world
how I miss you girl
a friend always, can't you see
there's a reason why you mean so much to me

hold the airplane while it circles the air
map it out girl, put an "X" on my floor
parachute and aim for my door
and land on down here
and remain where you're near
map it out, map it out, map it out
and stay awhile

MARIA

I'm a busy girl cuz I've got lots of friends
I meet them on the corner and they take me for rides
windows rolled down, a shiny breeze
one hand on the wheel, the other hand on my knee, and they say

Maria you are special
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight

they kept me back in 3rd grade, they talked to my ma
they told her I was too slow, that I would not get far
special's what they called me and they put me in a special room
with lots of funny kids and the teacher kept me late in the afternoon, and he said

Maria you are special
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight

my daddy was a salesman but he never went to work
he'd sit in front of the tv when I'd get home from school, and he'd say,
"Maria bring the bottle and I'll share half with yo
and I won't tell your ma, if you do what I say to do", and he'd say

Maria you are special
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight

last night I dreamed that the streets became the ocean
and I was drowning in a sea of cars
I reached out my hands as high as they would go
and I pulled myself up to a sky so calm

this morning I woke up to flooded streets
I opened my window to let in the breeze
I was looking down at the pavement and looking up at the sky
leaning out my window, wondering if I could fly, and I said

Maria you are special
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Maria you are beautiful tonight

UNMARKED ROAD

three more miles and we'll be there
but my gas gauge reads on empty
fumes in the tank makes my car spit
it's looking slim from here

somebody turned the street signs around
I think we're driving in circles
there's bullet holes through every sign
to welcome us to this town

hey ho, three more miles
hey ho, might as well be three thousand
hey ho, where do you go
when you're driving an unmarked road

the houses have all turned to trees
and the tar has turned to gravel
and the gravel is paved with muddy holes
and I'm hitting every one

you've been staring at that map
but it just won't talk back
and we've driven beyond the lines and the arrows
that get us from here to there

hey ho, three more miles
hey ho, might as well be three thousand
hey ho, where do you go
when you're driving an unmarked road

we were warned but we didn't know
just what they meant when they said it could get hard and slow

do you see those clouds moving in low
and the wind's picked up to a steady moan
I think i'll turn the headlights on
cuz it's getting dark and cold

a flash of lightning to the east
then the rain slams our windshield hard and mean
the brakes won't grip the wipers just groan
I think it's time to bail

hey ho, three more miles
hey ho, might as well be three thousand
hey ho, where do you go
when you're driving an unmarked road

A FLOWER IN THE DESERT

a flower in the desert
blooms anyway
noone there to see it
noone there to say
"it's so purple in the morning
it reminds me of our love"
it's not waiting, it's wide open
it holds itself up

and I go looking for answers for our love
and the more I complicate it all
the more I lose track of

a cool breeze on the ocean
keeps moving anyway
noone there to feel it
noone there to say
"it's so chilly, come hold me
only you can keep me warm"
it's not searching
it's completely whole

and I go looking for answers for our love
and the more I complicate it all
the more I lose track of

a snowfall on the mountains
gathers in the trees
the limbs bend, the ice shines
and noone's there to see
it's so quiet, it's so blinding
come make an angel with me
it's not trying, it's just falling
from up above

so when I go looking for answers for our love
please remind me that all I need is to think of

a flower in the desert
blooms anyway
we can't see it, but it's real
as our love is today

HOW'S THE WEATHER

dear James no matter where you are
when I write you I put sun in the envelope
tonight if you were here with me
we'd drink red wine and cups of tea
the fog came all the way to Market Street tonight
like god was pulling out all her special effects
in some last ditch effort at making this street holy again
and the hooker on the corner's having a busy night anyway
so tell me

how's the weather over there,
how's the weather over there
how's the weather

dear Lee I opened your letter
like an orange bursting on my skin
the peel got stuck under my nails
and for hours I could smell California sun
but it's raining out and I've had no customers for hours
so I took the dog for a drive and we backed into a pole
I don't know how long I can survive
with no heater in my cab driving through this London cold
without you

how's the weather over there,
how's the weather over there
how's the weather

dear James, it's so quiet tonight
the house just creaks and shifts in the wind
the wood in these walls
must be yearning to be trees again
I thought I'd be glad when the school year ended
but all of a sudden there's too much space
I'm thinking of painting my bedroom bright yellow & green
I wish you were here to help me clean up the mess

how's the weather over there,
how's the weather over there
how's the weather

dear Lee I got your letter
but it's soaked & blurry from the rain
the pages are all stuck together
but I can make out some details just the same
I'm troubled by your choice of yellow & green
I know you're prone to sudden extremes
so I need to save you from yourself
I'll be arriving with the papers a week from today
don't do anything

how's the weather over there,
how's the weather over there
how's the weather

LITTLE BLACK RIBBONS

little black ribbons
hanging against a black cloth
each with a name and an age
all from the city of Warsaw
they flutter in the breeze
like children
hung from trees
their weight not enough to still them

I close my eyes to stop
my hands and legs from trembling
cuz people might stare
at a grown woman crying
in the middle of a plaza
in the middle of the day
Yom Ha Shoah
remember

the black cloth moves over me
it's folds cover my head
pressed by 6 million voices
murmuring in prayer
from lungs and hearts and fists
made black and disappeared
remembered as little ribbons
listen
listen

little black ribbons
little black ribbons
remember

DROPS OF BLUE

what in the world were they thinking
when they sentenced you to forever
do they run like a clock on a spring
cold metal
unwinding

you were just saying goodnight
your lips on his, warm and near
beneath the blue moonlight
a shattering
the moon scattering

now there's drops of blue
falling on you
sidewalks full of splashes from the sky
and sometimes I
am more than surprised
at how dry are the eyes of the world

what in the world were they seeing
a man with a man, his hand in your hand
did they try to replace your heart with stone
your eyes with glass
your heat with cold

they didn't know about you
how you paint with a brush, brushing a touch
when you finish a painting you smile and cry
at the same time
how blue your eyes

now there's drops of blue
falling on you
sidewalks full of splashes of your life
and sometimes I
am more than surprised
at how dry are the eyes of the world

tonight I hold your canvas
the fresh paint drifting through your room
a portrait of your lover
unfinished
beside your bed

you are not alone
cuz I am here holding you
I see the portrait done
and I smile and cry
all at once

now there's drops of blue
falling on you
sidewalks full of splashes of my tears
and sometimes I
am more than surprised
at how dry are the eyes of the world
the eyes of the world

WHAT DO I KNOW

in the house that I clean
they've already turned all their calendars to March
someone knew it was time to move on
they knew that one month was over
and the next one had begun
but what do I know, what do I know

my name is written
on the first and third Monday of every month
that's all they know about me
they know that every other week their house will be clean
but what do I know what do I know

today I got stuck in February
my calendar skipping on the twenty eighth
my head flies back to a summer one year ago
when I was holding you in love
and you were moving with me
but somehow I got stuck and you got free

in the house that I clean
there is a place to put everything away
they know that behind one door there are coats and shoes
in one closet they'll find mops and brooms
but what do I know what do I know

my own apartment has no closets or doors
the ground keeps shaking underneath
all my memories are scattered on the floor
of when I was holding you in love
and you were moving with me
but somehow I got stuck and you got free

in the house that I clean
I'm down on my hands and knees
scrubbing a prayer through the floor
once I knew when it was time to go on
I knew when one month was over and the next one had begun
now what do I know what do I know

IF I COULD FIX THINGS

if I could fix things
and you were winter
and heat was as easy
as lighting a match
during any old blizzard
I would crumple our past
and set it on fire
and bring our flame back

but as we know it just snows and snows
and we can't find the holes
where the wind rips through our souls

if I could believe in
anything half believable
I would try to imagine
you and I
with a garden and children
and all of your paintings
and my room would be
just to myself

but where we stand there are no plans
for any such things
it's just my imagination trying to fix things again

counting up or counting down
I didn't count on
you and I ending up
you and I ending
you and I ending up here

I believe in nothing
I just like to fix broken things
but appliances don't make
such good friends
as you do
if I could just believe in god
maybe I could hook up
with someone who can fix love
the way I can't do

oh but I see no heavenly signs
no instructions divine
just two tired hearts with no rest in sight

THE COMING AND THE GOING

sometimes I feel like I could get lost
in the coming and the going
and disappear from the lives of all I've known
it seems so easy if you just keep busy
you can bustle right into a different world

getting lost in the coming and the going
getting lost in the coming and the going

no one knows me here I feel so far away
alone no need to share it's nice to live this way
I have no attachments no complications
I'm free to move on with no implications

getting lost in the coming and the going
getting lost in the coming and the going

alone I have time for the things I like to do
I write I sing I think and no one intrudes
the quiet runs inside me softening my body
filling in the gaps and the holes

getting lost in the coming and the going
getting lost in the coming and the going

JUST LET GO

over the river and through the woods
to your house you go
I used to live there, I'd drive there too
through the sleet and snow
until you said you said you said
No

under the sheets and over the silence
you told me the truth
that you'd walked out a long time ago
but you never bothered to move
and you said you said you said
I should go

after the fighting and before the truce
I used to drive slow down your road
just to look for someone new
a pretty face in your window
but she said she said she said
go home

so inside my mind and on an outside chance
I tried to will you from my mind
I thought I saw you rising up
then you got tangled in a power line
and I said I said I said
just let go

[Top of page]

TRAPEZE

I put on my best dress
the one I can move in
under the big top of the night
I climb up to the trapeze
I rub chalk on my fingertips
and I steady myself for flight
you're miles away on your swing
you glide toward me then fade back again
breathe in in in

I'm flying through the air
no net below me
I can make it from here
if you reach out and catch me

it's so quiet
I can hear the wind
my arms stretching and pulling me high
at the still point
I'll release the bar
and we'll pass through the roof of the night

the big moon is in my eyes
your hands stretch out to mine
breathe in in in

I'm flying through the air
no net below me
I can make it from here
when you reach out and catch me

I KNOW WHAT LOVE IS

I'm in love with someone I barely know
talks soft moves slow
met in a nightclub
small as a toilet bowl
he's no one that anyone else finds fun but me

he's got something I've never seen before
heart like a screen door
lets the night come in
moonlight and soft wind
I said, "you're lost only I can find you
come with me now and never look behind you"

you may know a lot of things
I know what love is
the world's not cars and pretty rings
I know what love is
spend a little time with me
find out what love is

went up to his room in the downtown lights
view of the street signs
he showed me the reasons
for things I'd been feeling
"you've been wasting time searching for perfection
running your whole life in the wrong direction"

you may know a lot of things
I know what love is
the world's not cars and pretty rings
I know what love is
spend a little time with me
find out what love is

standing close beneath the night
your hand in mine
moving like the wind in flight
this is love's desire
when the sun reaches the sky
we'll be floating high
seeing the world through your eyes
this is love's desire

you may know a lot of things
I know what love is
the world's not cars and pretty rings
I know what love is
spend a little time with me
find out what love is

WISHING WELL

don't call me
but I need to hear your voice talking to me
don't call me
cuz its not you that I'm aching for
if you don't see, or hear, or call

then it's just me in this wishing well
it's just me talking to myself
it's just me in this wishing well

are my two feet still pacing this floor
I pick up your photo and count to three
vein to vein we wed, forever more
now my veins are collapsing, they're thirsty, thirsty
if you don't see, or hear, or call

then it's just me in this wishing well
it's just me talking to myself
it's just me in this wishing well

a fever of fear runs inside to out
outside the crickets are angels singing
if I could just fall asleep and drown in my own dreams
I could be stupid stupid, not know any better
and if you don't see or hear or call

then it's just me in this wishing well
it's just me talking to myself
it's just me in this wishing well

throw my penny in and make a wish

GOD WATCH MY BACK

he came from Carson City
with a thirst for a new life
he was walking down the highway
I was driving by
but I'm so damn careless
I fell into his lonely eyes
till his arms were my horizon
his promises stretched for miles

and I fell in love good
and I fell in love hard
now I need to run
and I need to run far

God watch my back
cover my tracks
I need your help
to help myself
I did what I done
cuz his love was killing me

he said I was his river
I made sure that he was right
he drank my kisses in the morning
swam rolling currents every night
but I didn't give up
I didn't leave his side
till he'd gotten every drop
even the tears in my eyes

God watch my back
cover my tracks
I need your help
to help myself
I did what I done
cuz his love was killing me

the rain poured down
covered the sounds
no one could hear
the pain and fear
the first time I knelt
the next time I prayed
the last time he struck
I walked away

God watch my back
cover my tracks
I need your help
to help myself
I did what I done
bless this gun
cuz his love was killing me

WHAT IS THE ANSWER

I'm in love with you baby
love for real
but I just want the fun part
you want the whole deal
I'm always happy
happy alone
but when you're near me
I don't want you to go

what is the answer
what is the cure
what is the answer
I'm never sure

I never met a dude
who's so into being true
if I say that you're the one
will you keep it fun

what is the answer
what is the cure
what is the answer
I'm never sure

stars stay in the sky
and I'm still wondering why

what is the answer
what is the cure
what is the answer
I'm never sure

LAY ME DOWN

it started in New Jersey baby
felt like a mosquito bite
all swollen and itchy and longing
to scratch everything in sight
would it be putting it mildly
to say you got under my skin
but they don't make an ointment
for the shape you leave me in
now I'm feeling dizzy
and I'm moving kind of slow, so

lay me down upon your bed
night is out but the sky's still red
this lonely world is far from here
and the cure is so near
so lay me down

I'm sitting up at night
got the radio on
it don't matter what they're playing
I want you more with every song
I'm not one to fall and I never sway, so

lay me down upon your bed
night is out but the sky's still red
this lonely world is far from here
and the cure is so near
so lay me down

lay your hands
say the words
a greater plan
draws us here

lay me down upon your bed
night is out but the sky's still red
this lonely world is far from here
and the cure is so near
the cure is so near
so near
so near

so lay me down

SOMETHING SACRED

Serve me something sacred
place it on my tongue
keep it there forever
in a corner dark and warm
suck on it like candy
and it will never melt
love me from the inside
and save me from myself

serve me something sacred
cuz everyone else is serving lies
serve me something sacred
give me life

slide into the blackness
let it swallow you whole
every turn and muscle
of your sugar soul

serve me something sacred
cuz everyone else is serving lies
serve me something sacred
give me life

cuz everyone else is serving lessons from
the business side of a gun
they grab your money
and they leave you dead and done
they count it front to backwards
to measure what they're worth
and every last dollar
is another god they'll serve

serve me something sacred
cuz everyone else is serving lies
serve me something sacred
give me life

READY FOR FUN

I'm entirely overjoyed
to meet your folks they're both employed
hope I can say
that'll be me someday
you're my brand new lucky penny
shiny as a plate at Denny's
make my life
sunnyside

I'm ready for fun
walkin down the aisle style
get ready for some
cuz you're my favorite wild child
lalalala lala

can you spare a million dollars
I'm an under funded scholar
Phd
pyrotechnology
fahrenheit or centigraded
I can show you what you're made of
call it love
like Frankie Valle does

I'm ready for fun
walkin down the aisle style
get ready for some
cuz you're my favorite wild child
lalalala lala

NAME THE BRIDE

once you held me
in the pouring rain
your breath was mine
one blood stain
there was no shadow
only light
but you would not
name the bride

how hard you work to shade the light
you dip in every ink of night
you could not look her in the eye
you would not name the bride

so you call her any
word at all
star and stone
cliff and fall
but there's just one word
she answers to
one you can't say
when I'm with you

how hard you work to shade the light
you dip in every ink of night
you could not look her in the eye
you would not name the bride

love is strong
but even she can tire
if you don't claim
her mighty fire
sticks will scatter
rocks will cool
she'll dim her flaming
light to blue

how hard you work to shade the light
you dip in every ink of night
you could not look her in the eye
you would not name the bride
