Janet Bates
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." These words and others by Martin Luther King have inspired Janet to write about things that matter, and to use those talents she feels she was given, for a purpose.
She feels very passionately that change can happen through song, so has written songs that bring attention to things that are very wrong with our world, yet most people are poorly informed about. She attempts to appeal to our inner conscience, (rather than the evening news) to determine that something is very wrong out there.
The pathway of songwriting began for her Feb 2003. She attended an antiwar rally and picked up a brochure which contained excerpts from Martin Luther King’s Riverside speech (1967)
"A time comes when silence is betrayal." That time has come for us in relation to Vietnam. These words seemed to Janet to be speaking directly at her. She had strongly disagreed with what was going on, (with the US invading Afghanistan and then planning to invade Iraq) however she had done nothing about it. She felt she had betrayed her beliefs by being silent about them. He also said ““We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for the victims of our nation, for those it calls "enemy, for no document from human hands can make these humans any less our brothers.”
