Jo Gabriel
Jo Gabriel is best known for her intuitive control of the piano, her ethereal
voice and the unique depth of her songwriting. Often assumed to be classically
trained, Jo is completely self-taught. Her music stands in the genre of Ambient
Gothic, and is often compared to the likes of Kate Bush, Harold Budd, The Cocteau
Twins, and Lisa Germano.
Jo has established herself as a poetic artist whose otherworldly performances
have captured her audiences at such New York City venues as CB’s Gallery,
Brownies, and Meow Mix.
Jo’s 1995 debut album Lying in the Evidence of Love was voted top indie
pick in the July 1996 issue of Modern Musician Monthly; “This style seems
so natural to Gabriel that I bet she was doing it well before Amos was around”-Rich
Lupescu.
She has been interviewed by and performed live at Hofstra University’s
radio station WRHU, Seton Hall University, and The New School’s Tisch
Auditorium Stage.
She remains in rotation on various national college radio stations.
Her music can been heard on MTV’s Real World and Making the Band, and
has won several awards for her emotionally evocative score which was featured
in With One Voice: The Battle Against Breast Cancer on Long Island a documentary
which aired on PBS in the fall of 2000. Her music has been used in film shorts
such as Radical Raw Voice, an interview with world renowned poet Sonia Sanchez,
and Janeen Ilardo’s remarkable short film Predicate Thinking.
Her latest works are Tinderbox and The Unreachable Sky, released through the
indie label Faith Strange. Originally recorded live to a television audience,
Tinderbox showcases the incredible musical interplay between Gabriel’s
inimitable piano style and voice with long time collaborator Linda Mackley
on drums. The album has since been re-constructed with haunting background
vocals and a lush undertow of orchestral instruments, that cross-pollinate
Gabriel and Mackley’s synchronistic live performance.
Gabriel’s second new release The Unreachable Sky is a surreal atmospheric
canvas of piano-infused instrumentals dispersed among her ghostly vocal pieces.
Reviews of Tinderbox and The Unreachable Sky are available on the acclaimed
website Musical Discoveries (www.musicaldiscoveries.com). Gabriel was also
honored with a full feature article on their website in August 2003.
Her affiliation with master composer, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and
musical visionary Mike Fazio; well known for the unique approach he brings
to his ebow and pedal steel guitars, enables Gabriel to explore the nether
regions of her musical ability.
Her forthcoming projects; The Amber Sessions and The Last Drive-In are due
to be released in 2004. Both albums are ambient streams of consciousness in
tone, using a tapestry of world influences and ethnic instrumentation.
