Kristina Olsen
Kristina
Olsen, a musician well known on the folk club and coffeehouse circuit,
was born in San Francisco and grew up in Haight-Ashbury during the
`60s. Her exposure to this fertile bed of counter cultural expression,
social activism and the period's diverse musical influences laid
the foundation for her music. After living in various locales all
over California, Olsen settled in Venice, famous for, among other
qualities, its stimulating environment for artists. Here Kristina
self-produced two albums containing the fruits of her early songwriting
efforts during the `80s. Kristina began touring at the very start
of her career, and her love for music truly comes alive during her
in-person performances. Initially playing only intermittently in
the clubs and coffeehouses throughout America where singer/songwriters
have honed their craft for decades, Kristina has been welcomed back
to these same clubs -- along with literally hundreds of other venues
here and abroad -- to ever increasing and always appreciative audiences.
(She's on the road some 10 months a year!) Olsen won the New Folk
songwriting contest at the prestigious Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival
in 1985. That weekend, Kristina met Michelle Shocked and was asked
to play hammer dulcimer on Michelle's Polygram debut, Short Sharp
Shocked. July 1992 marked the release of Kristina's debut, Kristina
Olsen, on Philo Records , Rounder Records' singer/songwriter label
and a part of the Rounder Records Group.
Philo released its second Kristina Olsen recording, Love, Kristina
(Philo 1157), in August of '93. This album clearly demonstrates
Kristina's strength in handling sweeter, jazz-inspired sounds as
well as the tough, bittersweet bottleneck blues that has become
her trademark. The fall of '93 also saw Kristina -- along with several
other established Philo artists -- embarking on a historic national
tour in celebration of Philo Records' twentieth anniversary. In
the summer of 1995 Kristina Olsen released her third album, Hurry
on Home (Philo 1175), which contains 11 new original songs. Kristina
has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada and
Europe. She's played many prominent and celebrated music venues,
including: the Bottom Line (New York), Passim (Boston), McCabe's
Guitar Shop (Los Angeles), Backstage (Seattle), Cactus Cafe (Austin),
Birchmere (Washington, D.C.), the Edinburgh Folk Festival (Scotland)
and the Strawberry Music Festival (California). Not long ago, Olsen
added appearances in Hong Kong and at the Maleny Folk Festival (Australia)
to her performance resume. She's performed with such premiere national
and international folk artists as John Gorka, Christine Lavin,David
Wilcox, Patty Larkin, Loudon Wainwright III, Clive Gregson, Jonathan
Edwards and many others.
