Marcy Baruch
For
Marcy Baruch (Bah-roosh), Denver-based songwriter and perfomer,
creating well-crafted, adult-pop songs is viewed as a challenge
similar to that which has faced the greatest architects through
the ages...one that addresses the relationship between form and
function.
Marcy grew up outside of Philadelphia and made her way through
a number of cities before arriving in Denver. Her college years
at Wittenberg University emphasized studies in music and literature.
The core of who we are in our humanity and our relationships to
the world around us has been a recurrent theme that lies at the
heart of Marcy's songwriting. Baruch has been on the Denver music
scene since 1998 when she first stepped out as a recording artist.
A well-respected local talent, influenced by Shawn Colvin, Sinead
O'Connor, Amy Grant, Peter Himmelman, Karen Perris (of The Innocence
Mission), Indigo Girls, Aimee Mann and Lyle Lovett, among others,
she has proved over and over to be a crowd pleaser who connects
at a level of authenticity and musical excellence with her audience.
In Baruch's brand new CD release, Clearly, she has achieved the
necessary balance between musical form and function with carefully
crafted songs, allowing the potency of her lyrics and melodies to
exist uncluttered. "Writing good lyrics involves being intentional
about word choice, grammar, cadence and rhythm. Nothing is worse
than a song that is only emotive and not communicated with respect
for the craft itself," she says. "And yet, some of the best songs
I've ever heard or written myself have come in those moments of
complete surrender, when you just know it's finished as is and all
you can do is say 'ThankYou.'"
Songs such as "Clearly," "Mercy Mercy," and "Crazy"embody the best
of pop music with their catchy hooks and punchy delivery. "London
Bridge"and "This Road" will veer the listener ever so slightly into
a more country-folk vein, while wrenching ballads such as "Wait
For Me," "Simple Is Enough"and "For Purnel Goode" reveal the emotional
depths to which Baruch is willing to dig in order to embrace the
heart of the matters of which she speaks. Her voice is full of strong
conviction and intimate invitation. No matter what the vibe or the
subject matter, her songs ultimately pull at the strings of the
human quest for redemption...for some sort of coming to terms. More
