Rosie Flores

Biography from Rosie's web site www.rosieflores.com

Born in San Antonio Texas... You could say Rosie began recording at the ripe old age of 6 yrs. old. Her Dad Oscar noticed she loved to sing along with the radio... so, he started recording Rosie on his old two track Reel-to-Reel Tape Recorder. Her 1995 CD, "Rockabilly Filly" has one of those actual recordings of Rosie performing a song that she wrote when she was just 7 yrs. old.

At 12 yrs. old, Rosie's family left Texas and moved to San Diego, California. This is when Rosie witnessed first hand the emergence of California's own Folk, Surf Rock and Blues scene. At age 16, Rosie formed " Penelope's Children," a tight outfit of four talented girls, whose average age was just 17 yrs.old. Determined to take America by storm, they hit the road on several small east & west treks across America opening for many groups .. one of the most notable " The Turtles ".... Around 1978 Rosie formed "Rosie & The Screamers", a famous California circuit band whose repertoire included a blend of hard-core country, rockabilly & rock 'n' roll type songs... Following the departure of that project in 1983, Rosie joined " The Screaming Sirens " (now-defunct Enigma Records 1985) her second all girl band which featured " Pleasant Gehmen" lead vocalist " Rock/Pop writer for "Bam & Spin Magazine", "Boom Boom" Dixon on drums, Marsky Reins on fiddle/guitar, Miko - Bass. The "Cow Punk" band took an energetic approach to Country with heavy hillbilly riffs combined with awesome lead guitar work from Rosie. The popularity of the band grew which prompted a 1987 movie deal titled "The Running Kind". ( Aired on both HBO & Cinema Maxhere in the United States some video stores still carry it)

In 1987, Rosie signed with Warner Bros./Reprise Records & released her debut solo LP titled "Rosie Flores." The record was produced by Pete Anderson producer/guitarist for Dwight Yoakam & it included an awesome original version of "Heartbreak Train". The single "Crying Over You", ascended to an impressing #51 however, Warner Bros. shelved plans for a followup album. On that LP, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) is featured & he adds that special "Tex Mex" Squeezebox feel on "Midnight To Moonlight", an original co-written by Rosie & James Intveld. (This LP was re-released by Rounder Records in 1996 on CD titled "Honky Tonk Reprise") .

Rosie released her second solo album & first CD "After The Farm" Hightone Records 1992 & in Europe on Red Moon (Indie label out of Switzerland). This LP was Rosie's first chance to do what she always wanted to do in the studio. 3rd LP "Once More w/ Feeling" Hightone Records 1993, demonstrated Rosie's unique guitar style which urged music magazines such as "Musician," "Guitar Player," and "Guitar World" to profile Rosie's technique & influences. Her fourth album titled "Rockabilly Filly," released in 1995 proves that with time the wine can be fine.....it features duets with "Elvis Presley's Sweetheart" "Wanda Jackson" along with known in the fifties as "The Female Elvis" Janis Martin. Also, highlighted on the record are "Country's great guitar virtuoso" Albert Lee along with "Greg Leisz, K.d. Lang & Matthew Sweet, Russell Scott on upright bass, John Herron on piano & T. K. Smith" (Smith Ranch Boys)....and don't forget guitar rockin solos by Rosie on "Crazy Mixed Emotions" "His Rockin Angel" & "Rock Your Baby". Rosie's new CD "Dance Hall Dreams"
Rosie's latest CD, "Dance Hall Dreams" was recorded "Live" in her hometown of San Antonio Texas (Cibolo Creek Country Club) and later overdubbed in Nashville with Production Guru Ray Kennedy & Rosie Flores. With an all-star cast of musicians mostly from the Austin, Tx. area, the CD has been climbing the charts since it's March 2nd '99 release. See the Gavin "Americana" Chart. The Musicians: Cindy Cashdollar - Lap steel, Donald Lindley - Drums, Justin Reinhardt - keyboards-PC 88, Kevin Smith - Upright Bass tracks 1,2,5,6,7,9,11, Sarah Brown - Electric Bass tracks 3,4,8 10 & maracas & harmony "It Came From Memphis", Ray Kennedy - Wurlitzer eletric piano,12-string Guitar, Drums on "Dance Hall Dreams" Don Henry - Acoustic guitar & percussions on "Dance Hall Dreams", John Lennon vibrations, Tammy Rogers - Viola, Mandolin & harmony vocals, Siobhan Kennedy - harmony vocals, Radney Foster- harmony on "Bring It On", Eddie Dunbar - harmony "This Ol Honky Tonk, Rachel Gladstone - Background vocals "From Where I Stand".

Other Great Rosie Works...
Rockabilly's legendary.......... "Ray Campi"& Rosie teamed up for a pure-country album titled "A Little Bit of Heartache" on the Watermelon label . The album includes classics by Joe Maphis, Ernest Tubb, Merle Travis, Willie Nelson, and other greats along with some awesome originals......The Flores/Campi tandem proves there are a few styles of music quite as soulful as unadorned country. From the rollicking "The Train Kept A-Rollin" to the plaintive "Where Honky Tonk Angels Spread Their Wings" and the funny "I'm Gonna Wear the Pants" Rosie and Campi keep the real country flame burning brightly....Oh! you gotta hear Rosie perform a stunning version of her "Bandera Highway", never performed with a band till now acoustic version of "Bandera Hwy" which can be also heard on her album "Once More with Feeling" through Rounder Records.

Barbara Gogan/with Hector Zazou

Made On Earth was recorded in the U.S., London, Paris and Dublin, before being mixed at Real World outside Bath by Peter Walsh (Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, Scott Walker, etc). Musical contributors include keyboard player Peter Scherer, guitarists Henry Frayne and Marc Ribot, and woodwind player Renaud Pion.

The album's release was preceded by an EP featuring UK remixes by Funky Porcini (Ninja Tune), Only Child (from Manchester collective Grand Central/Fat City) and new SSR signing Juryman.

Barbara was the lead singer with The Passions, and co-wrote their classic "I'm In Love With A German Film Star". After a spell living in New York and Russia, she moved to Paris where she first worked with Zazou on his acclaimed Sahara Blue album, which also featured contributions from Gérard Depardieu, Tim Simenon, Khaled and Ryuichi Sakamoto; Barbara has also contributed to Zazou's other recent projects including the fascinating Songs From The Cold Seas (also features Björk, Suzanne Vega and John Cale, amongst others) and 'Glyph', his collaboration with Harold Budd.
