Loni Rose

Loni is a 24 year old singer/songwriter that first decided to pursue a career as a professional singer at age 9 while living in Nairobi, Kenya. "I always wanted to sing," Rose said. "I remember walking into the kitchen and telling my mom that when I grow up I want to be a singer! I also grew up listening to my parents who both played guitar and sang me songs by some of the greats like Peter Paul and Mary, John Denver, and Simon and Garfunkel," said Rose, "their love for music definitely impacted and inspired me."

Loni Rose began composing original songs when she was sixteen. Her collection currently numbers over 70 songs. While her earliest compositions were crafted with piano, her primary writing instrument is now the guitar. Her major songwriting influences range from Shawn Colvin and Rickie Lee Jones to Crowded House, The Chieftains, and David Gray.

    Lisa Cerbone

Mercy is a clever, intelligent piece of work. Lisa Cerbone likes to weave various pieces and styles together into little tapestries in which the light, ethereal tones of her innocent vocals get to contrast with some darker strands of droning rhythms, dark lyrics, or subtle tonal contradictions. Only occasionally does she take a rhythm up to a fairly quick pop beat, preferring instead steady consistency which creates a layer over which she can gently modulate her voice and melody structures.

In the end, Lisa Cerbone creates hypnotic tonal patterns which get enhanced by the gentle modulations of her voice. Even when she does speed up her delivery as she does on "Between Hi and Goodbye" and "Sorry," the drive and melody hold to a fairly straight line that, particularly in "Sorry," even the chiming of the electric guitar doesn't try to disturb. Instead, it's the bass line in "Sorry" which moves the greatest range, accenting that deliberate darkness which the lightness of Cerbone's voice likes to stand against. Generally, though, the pacings show a slow patience which provides the framework for the interplay of the disparate parts which are then asked to work together.

The title song, "Mercy," is a good example of Cerbone at he most intelligent. An acoustic guitar gives way to an electric guitar before Cerbone's voice enters carrying a tightly-centered melody line. Then bass, percussion, and drums come in with only the occasional drum beat at first varying the droning bass line and steady percussion sounds. As she rolls into the second verse, the drums start regularly providing some punch to the drone line, and at the end of the second verse she lets a slide guitar provide a distinctive blues run to contrast with what has been developing all along as an Eastern melody and rhythm. The electric guitar changes during the next break, adding a pure rock tone, while at other times the guitar provides some other-worldly spaciness to the piece.

That's the type of care and construction Lisa Cerbone puts into her work. She goes for a mood with each song and then sets up some intriguing sounds to achieve that mood. Her avoidance of the predictable or the quickly appealing in favor of these tonal pictures will require an intelligent group of listeners who like their rock to challenge them with new techniques and ideas. Those who require that will have no problem seeing Mercy as a work of unusual care and refinement.

    Aynee Osborn

Such things as fame occasionally happen over night but, more often, take years of hard work. For Aynee Osborn it's been five years of playing and writing and it's paid off in the release of her Country Town debut album, Fall Into Place. This singer/songwriter has managed to work on her craft and form very strong bonds with writing partner Hugh Cline and other like-minded musicians, as well as develop a devoted following of fans who can be counted on to show up anywhere she's performing.

    Carol Valentine

Carol Valentine is a songwriter in touch with the deeper side of everyday life. As a singer, she combines a rich, natural sound with an ability to take her voice where it needs to go in order to convey the emotion of a song. "I love to sing," Carol says. "Traditional, pop, folk, country, free improvisation, classical, jazz, world beat, each one is an opportunity to express a different side of my musical multiple personality. And even though folk is my strongest influence, I'll draw on any style when I write and perform my own music. A self-professed "folkie" and one-time creative writing student, she brings a down-home quality to her skills as a trained musician, creating music that's rich in texture, full of heart, and lyrically intelligent.

Standing Tall, Carol's debut CD, was released in early 1997. Called a fresh breeze of folk-rock, this collection of eleven original songs reflects the changing experiences and moods of her life, from angst and heartache to celebrating the beauty of nature and the growth that comes from the challenges of love and life. The album showcases her abilities as a singer, songwriter, and arranger, and treats the listener to outstanding performances by Bay Area and Oregon musicians.

Carol earned a B.A. in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1984. Soon thereafter, she landed in Santa Cruz, California, where she put down roots, honed her skills as a voice teacher and developed singing workshops for local community education programs. Besides performing original folk and jazz in Bay Area clubs, concert halls, and coffeehouses, she spent a brief stint as a singer in Kosono, a Nigerian Afro-pop band. In 1989, she co-founded What Four!, an award-winning women's A Capella quartet that gained a loyal following during their three years of concert performances, including opening sets for The Bobs and Lucy Blue Tremblay.

Carol left the Bay Area in 1992 and settled in rural Selma, Oregon. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, she has performed for the International Folklore Project and as a showcase performer at the Northwest Folklife Festival. Through concert and coffeehouse performances and radio airplay, she is creating an expanding regional audience. Inspired by the beauty of rural Oregon, the adventure of connecting deeply through love, and an ongoing search for expanded spiritual aliveness, Carol continues to teach and to write. Her most recent musical endeavor is directing the One Love Spirit Choir, which she founded in February, 1997.

"Themes of love, friendship, and spirit are clothed in beautiful melodies, exciting rhythms and the expert use of horns, keyboards, violins, harp and guitar that make the sounds you want to hear where they mean the most. Best sound of all is Carol's strong, clear voice that communicates the right emotion for each piece and makes the listener want to ride with it to the end. This CD announces a new and gifted sound in our midst."
    - Victory Review

"Carol Valentine...drafts songs that reflect an independent thinker and a free spirit. She creates a fresh breeze of folk-rock that carries the hints of several musical influences while retaining an original voice. Her debut CD demonstrates that she is ready to stand tall and continue to grow as she listens to the echoes of her life."

    Julie Henigan

Waterbug is proud to announce the release of Julie Henigan's American Stranger. A native of the Missouri Ozarks known for its rich musical traditions Julie Henigan has long had a deep affinity for American folk music; while several lengthy stays in England and Ireland have enhanced her innate feel for British and Celtic music. A singer of remarkable depth and skill (her vocals have been compared to the sound of a french horn), Henigan placed first in women's traditional singing in Rothbury, England in 1987. An accomplished instrumentalist - on guitar, banjo, dulcimer, and fiddle she creates accompaniments that are both subtle and arresting. Julie holds a Master's in folklore from the University of North Carolina. She has performed at numerous clubs, festivals, dances, universities and radio programs in the US and Europe. She recently completed a book/CD on DADGAD (tuning) guitar playing for Mel Bay Publications.

American Stranger, Henigan's first CD release, includes rare versions of traditional ballads "John Randolph" and "Pretty Polly;" "Thug Me Ruide," an Irish Gaelic song performed a capella in sean nos style; four original tunes in the tradition; "The Cowboy's Girl" and "Blue-Eyed Boy" from the Southern Mountains; "The Hare's Dream," an exquisite rendition of an Ulster folksong from the point of view of the prey; and Henigan's "Farewell Song." 16 tracks in all. Julie Henigan is one of the true keepers-of-the-flame of traditional music and song.

Ever hear the expression "big things come in little packages?" If so, let me tell you about a dynamo of a soul singer, Vykki Vox. This diminutive vocalist (just under 5 feet) delivers a soulful serving of blues and funk on her first release for WebRock, Soul Searching.

Rather than just sing the blues over the typical shuffles, jumps and funk that is the blues. Vykki and her group really mix things up. "I'm On Your Side" opens with a funky clavinet line courtesy of Dave Osoff, and doesn't look back. Ex-Billy Joel guitarist Dave Brown does some excellent slide work here as well. "Come to Mama", a cover of a tune originally done by Bob Seger, is a rhythm section vehicle for drummer Jim Sturdevant (Heavy Metal Horns) and bassist Joe Downs. Sturdevant lays down a tom-heavy drum ostinato, while Downs pops away like there's no tomorrow. Very funky.

"Pack It Up", another greasy, sweaty funk number featured saxophonist Scott Shetler on tenor and bari saxes, and some nice guitar work by Jeff Buckridge. "Maybe" was a gospel inflected tune that was an excellent vehicle to demonstrate what a voice Vox has.

Radio Kings frontman Brian Templeton makes a guest appearance for a duet with Vox on "Something You Got", a rolling, New Orleans influenced number. Templeton also lends his gritty harp stylings to "Something You Got" and "Rod & Real".

Vox, who regularly hosts a local television series called Ladies Sing the Blues, is one of Boston's newest vocal sensations. Besides her weekly show on BNN-TV, Vox has also appeared on "Blues on Fire", on WGOT-TV, and seems to be gaining steady acceptance as one of the area's most talented female vocalists. Soul Searching proves that she and her band are equally adept at swing, funk, soul, and gospel. Vykki Vox has arrived.

    Madeleine Hart

Since first appearing at the Whole Coffee House at the University of Minnesota in the mid-Seventies, Madeleine Hart has graced many a Twin Citie's stage with her rich alto voice and her compelling lyricism. Beyond that exquisite voice, at once earthy and ethereal, she is known as a singer whose capacity for narration is both powerful and heartfelt.

In those early coffee-house days, Hart's own material was influenced by a mix of contemporary folk writers such as Canadian artists Ian and Sylvia, Eric Anderson and Buffy Sainte Marie. She has continued to captivate audiences these past twenty years by ever expanding her repertoire of original material -- everything from bluesy rock to sultry ballad to downright country with a twist, ultimately distilling her own style of "Rhythm & Folk".

In True Heart, the seasoned singer-songwriter has distilled the very essence of Hart. Backed by some of the area's finest musicians, she sings her songs of joy and sorrow, love and loss, demonstrating the dimensions of her singing and song-writing virtuosity. From downbeat to up-tempo, from the haunting lyricalness of "Galileo" and "Eyes of Blue" to the poignant promise of "Angel on My Shoulder" and "Landslide" and the wicked-raw cry-in-your-beer country of "Could've Had Me"; from the wistful longing of "Tell Me Now" to the smoldering swelter of "Cool Rain" and the riveting affirmation of "Gloria" and the title song, this True Heart will steal yours.
