Mister Heartbreak expanded Anderson's sound considerably from her first album (1984's Big Science). Employing such diverse performers as King Crimson's Adrian Belew and the writer William S. Burroughs, Anderson weaved together songs from her 4-hour performance piece United Sates Live, along with a collaboration with Peter Gabriel (on "Excellent Birds"), and a song inspired by the Burt Reynolds film "Sharkey's Machine" ("Sharkey's Day").
