Second Nature SECOND NATURE is our first release of 1994. Kat Eggleston is a gifted song-poet and traditional singer. She sports top-notch musicianship and interpretive skills. Passionate, well-crafted lyrics create images of intense conflict with arresting realism:
My lover was two men, the damned and the blessed · A dozen roses in his hand and fire in his fist · He said he floated weightless above his evil twin · Who put the rips in my blue dress and purple on my skin · In fury...
"My Father's Garden" traces her father's life from his childhood in the Oklahoma dust bowl to her childhood home in the Pacific Northwest. "Trick or Treat" explores sexual game-playing and ambivalence. Included are eight originals, previously unrecorded songs by Jano Brindisi and Andrew Calhoun, and two from the English and Scottish traditional repertoire. The album features cello, fretless bass, uillean pipes, pennywhistle, piano, bouzouki and mandolin, supporting Eggleston's intricate, percussive guitar style and striking alto voice.
"Not only is Kat Eggleston one of the best and most versatile singer-songwriters I've ever heard- there are a whole lot of more celebrated people out there who can't carry her fingerpicks- but every time I hear her she gets distinctly better. If this keeps up she's in serious danger of becoming a national treasure."
