LETTER FROM PHRANC

July 1990

Dear Music & Life Lover,

In 1985, 1 took the money I'd saved from teaching swimming and went into Radio Tokyo Studios (a small recording studio) to make my first record. I knew nothing about making a record, I just knew what I liked and the sound I wanted. I wanted to make a record that sounded as flat and true as Bob Dylan's first album and I wanted to include the sassy humour of Allan Sherman's "My Son The Folksinger". The final result of this little adventure was fifteen songs, twelve of which became my first album "Folksinger". I'm excited to announce that this once hard-to-find record, that I hold so dear to my heart, is now finally available as a CD and includes "Everywhere I Go (I Hear The Go-Go's)" as a bonus track in addition to the twelve original cuts.

This is a simple record. It's not fancy. But listening to it still makes me feel good. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Lots o' love,

FOLKSINGER

"Folksinger", Phranc's critically acclaimed classic original first album, is being re-released on Island and (for the first time) on CD. This includes the previously unreleased track 'Everywhere I Go (I Hear the Go-Go's)." "Folksinger" is pure Phranc; from the mocking satirical sing-a-long of "Female Mud Wrestling" to the resonant rendering of Bob Dylan 's "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll. " It's a record that captures the personality of the woman that B.A.M. magazine descibed as "both worldly-wise and inspirational, something sorely needed in these cynical times."

Some quotes on FOLKSINGER:

"...a shining example of unvarnished truth in advertising...The record's most powerful political statement is her matter-of-fact assumption that a sense of justice and a sense of humor don 't necessarily cancel each other out."
-SPIN

"Record Of The Week.... Proud, cool and graphic...A wry observant power here."
- NME

"Phranc's disarmingly personal and humorous songwriting, up front humanistic stance and evocative alto vocals...Phranc is a latter-day Jonathan Richman with some provocative twists.
-Los Angeles Times
