Patrick Charles Fay  (1878 - 1941)

Patrick C. Fay was born in Ireland on July 11, 1878⁴, probably in Monaghan, although this is not substantiated. He immigrated to America aboard the SS Teutonic, which sailed from Liverpool, England, arriving in New York in 1899, on either June 8⁵, June 14, or June 24.⁴

His wife-to-be, Sarah A. Hand, had arrived about one month earlier (May 11, 1899), having sailed from Liverpool on the SS Teutonic. She had been residing in Ballybay, Ireland. According to the Ellis Island manifest, she went to live with her aunt, Ellen Hand, who paid for her ticket across. Her stated address upon arrival was to be 98 W. Rines, Providence, RI.²

Patrick and Sarah were married on April 30, 1903.³ His naturalization card, dated July 7, 1906, shows his address as 81 Trask St., Providence.⁴ According to the 1920 and 1930 Census, they lived in an apartment building at 155 Sorrento Street in Providence. In 1908, Patrick began his career as a police patrolman.

Unfortunately, on April 11, 1923 Sarah died at 42 years of age. This is just weeks after of the tragic death of the couple's first son Stephen, who died at age 17 in a bakery accident (March 13, 1923). Patrick was left to raise the rest of the children by himself. Sometime prior to 1941, the family moved to 31 Sorrento Street.

Patrick died suddenly of a heard attack on May 1, 1941 at age 64, in Providence, while going to a friend's funeral. He was buried in St. Ann's Cemetary in Cranston, RI.¹ A number of other family members are also buried in this cemetary.
