Adoption

After several years of marriage with no children making an entrance into our lives, we decided in 1994 to begin pursuing adoption. It took about another year to receive approval from a nearby adoption agency for us to become prospective adoptive parents. In March of 1997, we got a call from our adoption agency saying we'd been selected by a couple for placement of their soon-to-be-born baby girl. The birth mother was 18 and the father 35. We met with the couple and our social worker a week later -- they liked us and we liked them. With both of them being carnival workers who traveled a lot, they felt the traveling carnival environment would not be the best place to raise a baby, so they had decided to place their child up for adoption.

The Birth Parents

The birth mom resembles my wife, Karen (even her height), and seemed quite mature for her age. The birth dad and I (Bill) seemed to share some tastes and interests (and he is my height, too). We invited them to visit our home so they could see our house and our neighborhood, and we could get to know each other a bit better. It was a very nice visit. They invited us to be present at the hospital in their home city for the delivery, and to take the baby home after the hospital stay. Needless to say, we were getting pretty excited. We then began making final preparations for the arrival -- any day -- of the baby.

The Call

newborn Jamie

On Saturday, April 19, about 6:30pm, we got a call from the couple saying the mom was in labor. We hurriedly put our already packed bags and a few other last second items in the car, and headed off to the hospital in their city. We got there at about 8:15pm and were escorted to the labor/delivery room. At 12:30am, April 20, 1997, a beautiful pound, 11 ounce, 18.5 inch, brown haired, hazel eyed baby girl emerged! It was a wonderful and awe-inspiring experience. We all shared congratulations and ogled over the baby. Afterwards, Karen and I were allowed free access to the newborn nursery where the baby stayed for the next 36 hours. The very supportive staff gave us many one-on-one educational tips and demonstrations of how-to's with the baby -- and even called us at our nearby motel during the wee hours of the night so we could come over and feed her when she called for it.

Naming the Baby

The birth parents had already planned to give the baby the first name of Jamie. Coincidentally, Karen and I had also been considering the same name! Needless to say, it took!

A New Family

Jamie Llewellyn arrived at her new home with her new adoptive parents on Monday, April 21. Since then we have been taking much delight in watching her grow. It took us just about three years of pursuing adoption, with the emotional and prayer support of many, but we are now proud parents of a wonderful and beautiful, God-sent little girl!

Open adoption

We maintain contact with the birth parents so they can be aware of how their little girl is doing, and so Jamie can know her origins as she grows.

Feel free to write back to us with comments.
