by Bill Llewellyn

Greetings!

I have four demo songs online for your listening pleasure. The first was put together after a little over 2 years of working at learning the pedal steel guitar. I'd passed the four year mark for the other three. For two of the demos, the background music is from (the late) Harry Hess's accompaniment tracks. The first demo uses the track for "I Love You Because" (a slow version), but I made up my own melody line because I didn't actually know the original song, so what I've ended up with here is in fact a different song that only uses the chord progression of the track. I'll be giving it its own name eventually. The second demo is a rendition of one of my all-time favorite rock ballads, Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is." The third demo is "The Shadow of Your Smile". I hope I did the song justice, because I used to love to hear my dad play this on the piano when I was a kid. The fourth, "Teach Your Children," is actually a demo song done by and for the band "SDC" who asked me to add the pedal steel track (the demo is included here with their permission).

  1. A spin off of "I Love You Because" (1.3MB MP3). December 2001. Background track by Harry Hess.
  2. "I Want To Know What Love Is" (5.9MB MP3). November 2003. Background track by Bill Llewellyn.
  3. "The Shadow of Your Smile" (2.5MB MP3). January 2003. Background track by Harry Hess.
  4. "Teach Your Children" (2.9MB MP3). February 2004. Played and sung by the group "SDC".
Technically speaking

My MSA universal 12 string was recorded direct (no amp or mic) into my Mac computer through a Lexicon MPX 100 effects unit for reverb. Depending on the track, I also added a little more echo/reverb to fill in during the mix. The recording was done using Performer 6 software for the 1st and 2nd demos and Digital Performer 4 for the 3rd and 4th.
