The Early Years
- Nov 1995:
- User Bin is created by Lloyd Lim; directories are based out of
/nobak/limunltd
- 1995-1996:
- User Bin receives many contributions from users; Eric De Mund,
Douglas Kaufman, and Todd McLaughlin make especially significant
contributions
- Dec 1996:
- Lloyd burns out and fails to maintain the Bin
How a Bill Becomes a Law
- 29 Apr 1997:
- a2i announces that it intends to retire /nobak;
discussions about the future of the User Bin begin
- May 1997:
- Eric De Mund announces his impending departure from a2i; more
discussion about the future of the User Bin
- 22 May 1997:
- Lloyd posts the 1st Request For Discussion containing proposed
Bylaws for the User Bin
- 3 Jun 1997:
- Lloyd posts the
2nd Request For Discussion
containing slightly revised Bylaws
- 7 Jun 1997:
- Jim Hurley, the neutral vote taker, posts the
1st Call For Votes;
the voting period is one week
- 15 Jun 1997:
- Jim announces that the Bylaws were
approved
with 17 voting yes and 2 voting no; Lloyd is underwhelmed; a2i considers
the User Bin a low priority
- 1997-1999:
- Douglas Kaufman fills some holes left by Eric De Mund's departure,
but these contributions go unnoticed because Lloyd isn't maintaining the
Bin; Bennett Todd creates and maintains a User Bin clone
A New Hope
- 29 Mar 1999:
- a2i introduces the first FreeBSD machine
- 10 May 1999:
- a2i states that it will allocate resources to the User Bin, if the
Bin supports the FreeBSD environment
- 11 May 1999:
- User Bin states that it will add support for FreeBSD
- 24 May 1999:
- a2i creates the userbin account
- 25 May 1999:
- User Bin begins the process of moving to the userbin
account and supporting both SunOS and FreeBSD
- 10 Jun 1999:
- User Bin opens for preliminary use out of
~userbin
- 15 Jun 1999:
- a2i finally retires the /nobak disk
- 1 Jul 1999:
- User Bin officially moves to ~userbin; old directories
out of /nobak/limunltd are phased out
Return of the Jedi
- 15 Sep 2003:
- User Bin updates website; web pages are updated to XHTML 1.0 Strict;
mailto links are removed; email addresses are obfuscated
